One of the interesting about this forum is hearing how things are done in different parts of the country. A recent thread is an example. The coach asked about feeding the visiting teams and coaches. He mentioned that everywhere he's gone, even when scouting, coaches got fed. In previous threads I've read about the "press box spread" where coaches in the press box get fed. I've never experienced any of these things.
I've only coached in urban areas where an hour trip is considered a long one so I realize that things are different in rural areas that regularly make long trips. I'm curious though:
1. Does the home team usually feed your team and coaches?
2. Is there free food in your press box?
3. Do you normally get fed when you're scouting?

Never been fed while scouting but I do know a few times we have had food in the press box. We have had some special events where we've eaten with the other teams afterwards, but never a regular thing.

No (our longest trips now are 45 minutes) but never have been, even when we had a couple over two hours
No (did at my last job but I think it was just for Press Box crew and maybe media)
Don't scout, haven't in 20 years - all film exchange

Some of my experiences have to do with always coaching at rural schools, some of it has to do with the way I was taught. Some good advice I was given: "Always treat your guests well, you never know if you'll be interviewing there". So I have not always gotten fed when I scout, but have always been let in free and sometimes fed sometimes allowed in the box (depending on school/size etc..) Our closest games is 90 miles from there it is anywhere from 2-4 hours so I have always had the option for food for the kids after the game, bc in reality if we dont or they dont have something then the kids might not eat bc there aint much food choices even on the way home for some. The coaches food I have always just given, but we have charged $6 in the past for the kids packs......have never had food waiting for them or me in the "pressbox" for a game lol.

Never heard of it. We can barely afford to have our JV wearing matching game uniforms.

I think I was misunderstood (I assume it was the thread of me whining that sparked this)...we do not eat with the opposing team we just have prepared togo bags for them so they can actually eat and charge $6 per bag, I just have always given coaches theirs for free. They dont sit and chat with us or anything they usually get it get on the bus and go. But really there is NOWHERE to eat at that time in our town or for most people on the way home. I wanna kick their A$$ but not starve the kids.

Our parents have snacks for us after away games regardless of how long the trip.

Our (rural) region feeds everyone after games. Some feed just the visiting team, some feed both teams. No press box food. When I've scouted live, I'm barely treated as a person, let alone treated with a meal...
I guess I don't mind sitting down with the other team and eating together after a game (I'd be absolutely fine not doing it, too, though). It's not something I was used to doing before taking my current job, but it's worked out okay.

Our boosters provide subs/chips/water for the team after games that are longer trips. Not sure I would trust the other teams and their food! LOL

we haven't done this in the past, but we now have a mom and dad who feed everyone before they get on the bus for all away games
supportive mom and dad, they have a Junior (varsity RB/OLB) and a freshman (JV WR/OLB) and they do this for both the JV and varsity teams before their bus leaves to head home

We've eaten with the other team sometimes after scrimmages or jamborees but never after games. We've only done it with a couple of teams. One team multiple times because it was for a 'cup'. I think it was worked it's way out since it involved playing games at irregular hours to accomidate the feedings.

We have fed opponents before but don't anymore cause no one feeds us. We have drinks in the press box but not a spread. The school we played at last Friday did, they had chicken wings chicken nuggets cookies and cupcakes. It was fun to eat while enjoying a 51-12 victory. This is in NC

For us, we always cater our pressbox, but we don't have a scout area for coaches. We'll feed opposing box coaches and our pressbox staff, but that isn't the norm for the conference we're in.
We provide drinks for opposing teams that are left in their locker room for after the game. It's the norm for our classification level.
For our away trips, we'll always order pizza for the long away trips delivered after the game, but that's only for one opponent every other year. Other than that, we don't do anything to feed the players. We're close enough to home that they like to go out with friends and teammates after the game to eat.

North Alabama, 3A football:
1. No. Occasionally the home team will provide a barrel full of cold soft drinks for after the game, but that's it.
2. Occasionally there is some form of free food in the press box, maybe 1/3 of the time. I've never partaken in it, but have taken a free water when offered.
3. 95% of teams play at the same time: 7PM on Fridays, so there is very little scouting here, and any scouting done is with a coach attending a game as a regular fan (essentially undercover), so nobody is getting free anything.

We take care of our players, not the opposing team. I just found out this off season that they had been providing food in the press box for whoever and whatever happened to wander in. I had never seen it or heard of it before. I told them save the money and spend it on our kids---naturally, some of the folks who used to eat have complained.
