Coaches,
How do you conduct your player exit interviews?
In the past we have used questionnaires to ask the players questions on what they thought of the season. Things like their likes and dislikes, what we can change. This year we are thinking of conduction face to face interviews with each player, their position coach, and the head coach, and possibly their coordinator (if either of them is not). This would be for the seniors and captains first and then the rest of the team including returning athletes.
Do any of you do this? How do you feel it compares to other methods? What type of questions are you asking?
Thank You Hoptions

we do this but only with the exiting players- meaning seniors. We encourage them to tell us exactly what they're thinking- let them know they've got nothing to lose, they're not coming back anyway, so be honest.. It takes a little convincing, but once they look at it like that they sing like birds.. I guess you could do this with all of your players, but we don't- our feeling is they're not going to be as brutally honest as the exiting players because they're afaraid they may say something that would be held against them next season- which isn't the case-but that's just our thinking..

how do you promote discussion with face-to-face interviews?
The anonymous written exit interviews....they usually let us have it. I would be skeptical of our players being upfront with telling it to our face in person? What has worked for you with this?

I would definately interview the seniors, sort of lets them know that its their program and hopefully you can include some "how do you plan to give back to the program in the future?" type of questions.

you let them know you want to hear the good AND the bad- especially the bad.. Usually they start off slow, but once they see you're listening and NOT being defensive they open up real quick- we remind them they're not coming back anyway, so let us have it.
I have thought of the anonymous letters for the underclassmen, but never done it.
