Got my first practice scheduled for Monday at 7-830. Had to start a little late due to the elementary school having open house. This is my first team for football that I have gotten the chance to coach since I quit playing 4 years ago, I'm extremely excited to get started.
But due to the short time frame to practice, I am planning on splitting up the skill guys from the lineman. Only have an idea on where a few of my players will be playing so this is my emphasis for Monday taking notes on the fly of everyone. My plan is to do a quick stretch and do a few things to get the heart pumping for the first 15 minutes.
Then, split all lineman and skill guys. I'm giving my line coach free range to do whatever he wants with them. He's a good coach and has helped me through a few things already before we even have our first practice. Has coached line for years. Basically with the skill guys, I am planning on just starting out showing them through a few basic routes nice and easy for the first few times through. Then have them go full speed for a couple times through seeing who can catch, run routes, and if I have a decent QB.
After that, I am planning on doing matchups for pass coverage/receiving(pair them up evenly in size of course). Having them go all out and battle for the ball, seeing what kind of toughness and hustle I am starting out with. Catch, tuck, and finish; incomplete hustle the ball back to the line.
For the last 20 minutes of practice, CONDITIONING! I already told my parents yesterday to please ensure that the kids are drinking ALOT of water constantly. I told them there will be alot of running and conditioning starting Monday. Told them I have to get the kids in shape at practice so they can have fun in the games and most importantly keep them healthy.
Just need a good conditioning drill for them to finish off. Thinking of something like our gassers we ran(over 200 yards a pop) but alot shorter obviously. It is 3rd-4th graders. Tuesdays practice will be normal 2 hour length and alot more to do on individualized fundamentals.
Does this sound ok for a first practice or am I over doing it for these kids? Mainly I want to see what I am working with skill wise, heart wise, and toughness wise.
