We had a 3rd year starting QB sustain a head injury in the offseason unrelated to football and he is out for the season. He asked me what he can do to best help out squad. We're a very small team and under staffed. My first thought is to have him coach the WR's during skill breakdown and to be up in the box during games. He's a very respected kid amoung his peers and parents. Do you foresee any problems with doing this? Like I mentioned before, he is a great leader and a very respected kid.

I'd get the approval of your AD but we've had kids help run drills before when injured and even had our injured running back sit in on a few meetings because he wanted to help still.

Is he going to be in meetings? How about have any personnel control? Those could get real tricky, even if he's in the press box sometimes we coaches say things that don't necessarily need to be repeated. Even if it's not obscene such as "We need to find someone to replace Matt, if he plays we will not be very good." How's that going to look if that gets out especially from a peer? I would think having him run drills/help out in practice that could be very helpful just keep in mind no matter how good of a kid he is or how respected he is among his peers he is still a kid/student. He could also help out in the film department

Along the same lines as fballcoachg, you can't put him in a position where he makes personnel decisions, contributes to personnel decisions, overhears conversations about players--that sort of thing. However, if you want him to help in drills, that shouldn't be an issue. I'm not all that sure about press box--ok to have him help up there perhaps, but not on a headset where he overhears conversations that may involve personnel.

We had that happen last year, actually.
What he ended up doing for us was helping out in drills, with the younger kids especially. He also did a ton of filming for me when we did some of our large group drills.

I think I'll have him work some skills during practice and break down some film and such so he can help out the kids on the sidelines during the games.

Help out at practice? Sure.
In the box. Nope?

Help out at practice? Sure. In the box? Nope. I agree as well here.

He could be a get-back coach if you don't need a filmer. Or put him in charge of loading to Hudl, doing the slavework of breaking down all the columns, exporting/sharing to opponents, etc.

If he has a hot mom, absolutely get him on staff!

I've always had a hard time getting consistent quality film. He could help in so many ways if he has a good attitude about it.

I wouldn't let a student sit in on staff meetings. You're going to be making personnel decisions and sometimes that will include confidential information about a player's character and possibly his family situation.

Game night I would not have a head injured kid on the sidelines. $hit happens. I would have him film another angle such as tight oline or wide db for more evaluation purposes.
