Looking for some Ideas to do with the kids in the evening after our last practice. Something fun,we are an inner city school that sadly for some of our kids was the best time they have ever had .Thought due to our lack of cash flow we were going to have to cancel but after telling these kids that ,you would have someone shot their dog. So our coaches and some families are digging into our pockets. We of course had our smore night but any ideas or traditions would be greatly appreciated,

4 on 4 Football tournament There are several water balloon games you can play that kids enjoy can set up relay races with water We try to end all "fun" events with popsickles, they are cheap, cold, and have sugar they heat the spot after sweating for a bit!

still thinking on this one because I think this is one of the most underated aspects of really successful programs (team building).
take the team to the local public pool
as Coach Mensing mentioned: relay races / tug-of-war. One we did in high school was the annual watermelon run that was basically an obstacle course and each kid had to run with a watermelon covered in oil through the obstacles...
Lineman Olympics / Backs Strong Man Competition
Check around to see if there is a ropes course nearby (usually your local National Guard branch might be able to help you out there)
At one school I was at, we ran a FREE youth football camp every Monday night for grades 3-5. It lasted 1.5 hours overall but the kids started looking forward to it and it helped us receive some great PR from a couple local newspapers and TV stations.
"What Football Means to Me" night, each senior reads a 1 page or more essay on what football/your program has meant to them. Then break off into as many groups as you can with 2-3 seniors to each group. Have each kid talk about what football means to them, why they play, what adversity they facing in life, what is their motivation, etc. It may seem corny but if I had to choose 1 team building activity to do with my team, it would be this one. These can be very POWERFUL sessions for young men but it is the ultimate way in my opinion to bring a team together.

"What football means to me/why we will be successful" can knock down walls.

Something that happened at our camp this year was playing chicken.. Players would hoist each other on their shoulders. The person on top had an egg taped to the top of their head and a pool noodle in hand. To win you had to use the pool noodle and smash the other teams egg. Was very entertaining and pretty sure some underclassmen won the event.

He is talking about being away at like a local camp ground with the team for a week or so.
We do a skit night on Wed. which is usually a pretty good time, I am sure with your team there would be some good laughs to be had! Just tell them to keep it clean and let them flame the coaches works well for us at camp. Can also add on to the skit night a talent portion if any of your guys have a unique skill they would want to show off, which can be interesting.

Skits where the kids respectfully roast (oxymoron?) the coaches is a blast.

We had NCAA Football tournaments, swimming, and some karaoke at our camps. The kids loved all of it. Many of these are great ideas, just about anything that breaks the hard work up is probably going to be well received.

Skit night is also a good time to realize how much they really pay attention to what you say and do. You will be amazed at the stuff they remember and make fun of!

Bowling night. Pick teams....and get after it.

Every Year at Camp I'd bring a big bag of M&Ms and would pass them around on Team Night.
I told the Kids to take as many as they wanted but to not eat them yet.
Then when everyone had some I'd tell them that for every piece that they had they would have to tell something about themselves.

There are a lot of initiatives you can pull from the experiential education world.
One activity is "one truth, on lie." Kids come up with one truth and one lie about themselves and present them in either order. Their teammates try to decide which is which.

Skits where the kids respectfully roast (oxymoron?) the coaches is a blast. So our first three days of camp out HC does some great things in between practices. Day 1 we will have a relay race but y can't run only speed walk. Day 2 we are gonna film a Harlem shake video Day 3 we will do a "hoot n holler" it's skits where kids will act out some coaches. Respectively of course. Those get pretty funny. I'm the new OC and they have already started on my usual quotes/phrases. My last stop, I would do something my old wr coach did for us. We would after practice have a water balloon toss. We paired up and lined up 10 yards apart, tossed a water balloon back and forth and if your balloon busted then your team lost and had to do some sort of condition. It helped create soft hands for us and my wrs that I've coached along the way. We also did a hula hoop competition, and frisball. Frisball was a game of frisbees that hand to e thrown in a bucket like shooting a free throw. Started from 5 then 10 then 15. Qbs like this one. I have taken my old wr to bowling night and we all competed. We had a local paint ball range near our college and I've taken them there. We had the slots against the wideouts. I still get calls from guys who wished they were back in those days. But find something that will require then to build with each other. That fosters team work. Something I want to do next year is take them to camp Pendleton and team up to do a marine course with some of the marines.

Did a sleep over at the school gym one year. LB, DL, DB broke up into groups and did a 5 minute skit of their position coaches "a day in the life". They got me pretty good on that one. We had a Madden tournament, what football means to me session, and had a guest speaker talk about "the power of 1". It was good stuff. By the way, anything where the kids can beat the coaches in something is going to be more than welcome.
I feel like we've gotten away from team building. Thanks coaches. Ropes course sounds great. I'm thinking about setting up a night working in a soup kitchen.
