Hey all. Well, here's the deal...
I just separated from my enlistment in active duty air force and moved back home here in Kentucky on Tuesday. Since then, I have been back at my old high school helping with the defense(mainly DL) all this week. Earlier this morning before practice, head coach told me about a spot at the local park to be a head coach for the team there. Said he'd love for me to take it, they've been wanting some former players with football knowledge to get up there and actually teach the kids some of the basics and techniques and the basic systems that they will be using in high school here. So, I jumped at the chance. Not sure of the age group yet, but I have zero coaching experience for football. Just coaches pitch baseball for a season before I enlisted right after high school.
My question is, where exactly do I begin at practices, teaching the kids, etc. I'm excited to be doing it, just don't know where or how to start. I know the basic stuff, proper tackling, gaps, alignment, shades, etc.

-Practice with tempo, coach on the run no standing around talking -get good assistants, football knowledge is less important then loyalty and buy in -Coach what you know and what your head hs coach wants you to teach them -Make it fun for them, you should have a goal of 100% retention

Have you ever worked with children in any capacity? Have you any experience as an instructor of any sort for adults or children? If yes to either question, you may be farther along than you realize. A lot of it is just getting & keeping their att'n.

I'm a HS coach and the first day of practice, the first thing that happens is that everybody in my position group-whether he's a new 8th grader or a three year starter-learns and works on stance.

I have coached one season of coaches pitch baseball before I joined the military in 09. A team with all of the kids that had NEVER played baseball before, the coaches put them all on the same team and took the good players. We finished 2nd in the league that year to haha
But, I will be coaching 3-4 graders. The team won one game last season. Was talking to some people and they all told me that they had a fast athletic team but the coaches was horrible; playing players out of position, not teaching them technique, etc. Basically the style of football that is line up here and go...
I am wanting to start them on the basics of the spread offense, screens, play actions, etc. We have tryouts on the 8th and draft that night. I am going for the fast players, don't care about size... I want speed.

Teaching kids who are 8 & 9 years old- who have never won:
Learn HOW TO TEACH and how to communicate effectively- progresssions Learn how ti MANAGE a team and parents effectively Learn WHAT TO TEACH- most youth coaches invest their practice time in the WRONG PLACES Learn the correct techs and schemes that make sense and have been proven in YOUTH football at THAT age group
What is BEST way to do thay? Asst coach for the very best youth coach in your area or follow a proven template or invest 100s of hours here and elsewhere to become a reasonably competent coach
