How important is a cover letter? What exactly do most of you put in one? Fairly new to the process - any help would be appreciated.

Think of the cover letter as the first impression the administrators will have of you. I think a cover letter is an important opportunity to make a great first impression. I include information about my years of experience in both teaching and coaching and some general information about what the school would get by hiring me. I think you almost have to brag about yourself (while being humble) in a cover letter; otherwise, how will they know how good you are?
I will send you the cover letter I used with my resume in my job search this spring. Drop me an email at gregkoenig@hotmail.com.

1st paragraph = What job(s) you are applying for, where/how you saw/heard of them 2nd paragraph = Current position(s), teaching certifications, years of coaching experience 3rd paragraph = Why you are interested in this job, and what personal/professional qualities you have that match their needs 4th paragraph = Express interest in being interviewed and when and where you can be reached.
Sell yourself succinctly - you're just trying to get an interview, not the job (yet). Keep your cover letter as brief as possible, and make sure you check for spelling and grammar errors!
Remember, they will hire you to do THEM a favor, not you, so emphasize how you can help them (experienced rebuilding, for ex.)

I honestly don't know how important they are. I generally have a form letter that I just plug names of people and schools into and what position I'm applying for (I have certs in two different areas). I don't know that they're really that important.
I recently got an interview for a driver's ed teaching position and head football coach and realized in my interview that I had put Ms. Blah Blah on the address portion of the letter, but had forgotten to change it to Ms. on the Dear Ms. Blah Blah introduction portion. It read in plain daylight Mr. Blah Blah. I still got an interview and was one of the finalists for the job. Don't know if they really pay much attention to them. Especially if someone at the school already knows you. If that's the case it's pretty much just a formality.
