For coaches in states that have a state all star game:
1. When and where is it played? 2. Who runs it? 3. How important is it to fans, coaches, and players?
In Virginia, our state all star game is tonight (July 12) in Hampton. It's run by the state coaches' association. In recent years it seems to have lost a lot of its luster. Many of the state's top players don't play in the game now and there doesn't seem to be a lot of interest in the game state-wide. As I see it the problems are:
1. Timing. Because of the way that colleges now do business, bringing incoming freshmen in for summer school, most of the D.1 recruits are on campus taking classes and aren't available to play in the game.
2. Location. Hampton is far from centrally located in the state. It's in the far eastern part of the state and a very long trip for a lot of Virginians. This is going to change next year as the games will be moving to Lynchburg for the next few years. We'll see if that changes anything.
How are things in your state?

Ours was last week here in Rhode Island. Ours has gone downhill and your post would sound exactly like mine. This was the first year RI split into two teams and played each other. We always played vs. Connecticut. I played in ours back in 2000 and it was played at UCONN. It's also been played at URI, Brown, Central Connecticut to name a few.

Ours is tomorrow in Illinois in Bloomington which is center of the state. It's a Shrine game.
I'm actually coaching in it tom. It's been pretty cool.

I have always thought these games were a cool thing. I loved playing in the game. However, although it's still a cool game, rarely do you see the state's best players on display for the reasons fantom said. I have noticed that when the game first started here in 99 almost all the best players played. Now the number has dwindled. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using proboards

Here in NC we have 2. The Shrine Bowl of the Carolina's is held in December and pits all stars from NC against All Stars from SC. It is ran by the Shriners. In about 2 weeks is the East-West game. It is players from eastern NC against players from Western NC. It is ran by the coaches association (I think) is during the state coaches clinic, and involves a lot of D2 type players and kids who didn't qualify academically. As mentioned before a lot of the best players are gone to summer school.

Ours is centrally located in Indianapolis. The game is next week. There are usually a few D1 players who do not participate for various reasons but it usually has a good turnout and is an interesting game. I don't always go but I will this year because one of our guys is playing in it.

Minnesota......ours was two weeks ago. It was played at St Cloud State which is kinda central. We played North vs South. It used to be Metro vs Outstate. I had a player in the game. I attended. I thought it was well attended. It's run by the MFCA. I think they do a good job, and it seems pretty important to the people involved.

Ours was in May. Plenty of good players but with only 4 practices the game was a little slapdash.
