Coaches, We have a great new group of student managers.
Trying to find enough for them to do.
What do you have yours responsible for? Can you share a practice / game checklist you have them do?

Disperse and gather up blocking dummies, cones, footballs, whatever you need to use each day. They could be assigned to do most anything that you have to take care of that wastes a minute or two of possible instruction time.

We visited Cal and watched how their field assistants (students) interacted with practice. We will install this framework with our managers this fall. Not a proven list but this is where we will start and then make adjusts as needed.
What do Panther Field Assistants do? 1. Assist their assigned coach in drill set-ups (cones, fb's, blocking dummies, etc) 2. Keep water proximal to the drills while coaches are coaching 3. Help with game equipment management supervised by coach(es) 4. Shout encouragement to players 5. Sort game uniforms for distribution 6. Follow our code of conduct 7. Have a great time
What don’t Panther Field Assistants do? 1. Take out and put away field equipment (players do this) 2. Get ordered around by players 3. Converse with players during practice 4. Attend team meeting 5. Miss practice or other assigned days/evenings
They would have to put in about 50% of the time that a player would: • We'd need them during the pre-season (aug 17 to aug 30) • Tues / Wed during the season • Two will be designated for Frosh/JV games • They will rotate in groups of 3 to assist with varsity games
EXPECATIONS: 1. Wear their BLHS FB T-shirt or jacket to practices 2. Grade check weekly
A letter is not out of the question as many sports managers earn letters. Lettering is based on their overall season performance/attendance. We will come up with a point system for this later.
PRACTICE POSITIONS: 1. (5) Offensive a. OL b. TE c. RB d. QB e. REC
2. (4) Defensive a. DL b. DE c. LB d. DB
3. (1) Timekeeper – Runs practice clock/horn 4. (2) Gear Assistants / Varsity – JV Uniforms / JV & Frosh Games
GAME POSITIONS: 1. Game Equip set up a. We will assign 2 players for Frosh and JV Games (Gear Assistants) b. We will assign 3 players for Varsity Games i. We will rotate this with Panther Field Assistants

We had a spec ed student be our manger 4 years ago. He was in charge of filming games and practice, setting up practice equipment, and the equipment room. After about a week he was driving his small truck around the practice filed while his spec ed girlfriend would walk behind the truck and set up the equipment. And the 2 of them had a lot of free time in the equipment room.......And I don't want to know what they where filming.... Careful what you wish for.

We have 3-5 kids (usually girls who want to earn service hours) sign up as practice managers. The main jobs we give them also revolve around gettign water out to the drill areas and helping set up and pick up the equipment. We also make it very clear that they are NOT there to be ordered around by the players nor are they there to socialize with the players.

Have them help out at practice by setting up gear, and drills. Also have them spot the ball on your team stuff. They can also work with a position coach and do what ever the position coach needs them to do. You can also have them do the laundry and fix any gear problems.

In my 32 years of experience, we've had several female student managers that were very helpful. But sometimes their motivation for being there was because their boyfriend was on the team and she wanted to be around him or . . . they were looking for a boyfriend. All participants need to be properly supervised at all times or you could have an unfortunate situation on your hands.

I'm a student equipment manager at an SEC school. We do a lot of the things ya'll have been talking about. We have a staff of 12 student managers. Each is assigned to a coach except for one is the gate guy (clock operator, checks media and guests in and out of practice) and another is "inside guy" and is in charge of all cloth issues for games and practices, and is the packing guru for away games. I would encourage you coaches to seek some guys who love football, but don't necessarily have the desire or ability to play, to come work for you. Explain to them the benefits of working for your team, and also the future benefits. We are all on scholarship, get all the gear the players do, travel to away games (on our schools dime, and we get per diem). Get all the bowl gifts the players do, and for someone like me who wants to go into coaching I have gained very valuable contacts. It's a lot of hard work, and long hours but it is a lot of fun, i'm around the game i love, and it teaches me a lot about responsibility, taking pride in the details, and working under pressure. Basically almost any job I have after this will be a piece of cake. We have to be on our toes because our coaches want stuff done and they want it done 5 minutes ago. We get yelled at every now and then but for the most part we know what to expect and the coaches treat us with respect and really appreciate what we do for them. Sorry for rambling on, just thought i'd throw in my two....er.....10 cents.

Good for you coachbass!! It's always good to see someone that takes pride in the job they are doing. Best of luck in your coaching career after college.
