Are any you both head coach and AD? What does the AD role add onto your coaching duties? How do you balance both? Any of you teach along with being HC and AD?

I am not currently an AD/HC, but was for 9 years before last year. I always tried to get as much of the AD prep work (game and officials contracts, workers, etc.) in place before football started (spring or summer). For game coverage (i.e other sports), I elicited as much help as I could from administrators and other staff (usually those who had sons/daughters playing).
I didn't mind the workload; some issues did arise RE: people (parents and community, other coaches) thinking I gave referential treatment to football over other sports (translation: football won, other sports generally did not).
In the right community and with the right person, it is not too hard to balance your time. My issues (and eventually, the reason I left that job) were all parent issues in another sport. There were some things I just grew tired of dealing with constantly.

I am the AD/Head Football Coach. I also teach Sports P.E. which is the weight lifting class for my football players. That is 1st Period. I have 2nd and 3rd off and do as much of my AD stuff and football prep as I can during those two periods. I teach World History during 4th and 5th Periods. I have 6th off and get ready for practice and prep for the next day in my WH classes.

AD and HC for 15 years at 3 schools. I have always worked with great coaches but the big wigs can make it a terrible job or a great one.

I am AD/HC entering my 2nd year. If an AD is going to be a head coach it almost has to be in the fall. It works out very well with only playing 1 game per week. I have a great admin team who helps cover supervision in the fall so I can coach. Huge benefit is when a parent is not happy with me, I tell them to make an appointment with the AD. You should see the looks on their face when they realize I am also the AD.

Blacknight, you may have the perfect schedule It worked well, but of course Admin has taken away one of my prep periods for next year because of budget. I will now have my Sports P.E. 1st as before and then teach World History 2nd through 4th with 5th and 6th off now.

Have those of you that have been AD/HC had it as your primary job (as in full time AD) or as a stipend?
I'm guessing blacknight yours is a stipend since you are teaching Social Studies as well but what about the rest?

I'm full time AD and head coach. I do teach an athletic period. You do need to find a balance so it doesn't look like football is getting everything. At the same time football is bringing in more money and that allows us to get more stuff.
Admin wise I have an assistant to be acting "AD" during game day. I'm at a great place so that helps as well!
I do miss being in the classroom with the kids but I make sure I'm in the hallways during passing period and visible as much as possible so I stay plugged into my players and not locked behind a desk.

The only way I would be hfc is if I am also the ad or at least the campus coordinator. There would be a few exceptions to this,,,,, a one horse town with and old football coach as ad that I worked with and know and me as the hfc.
