Pretty good, didn't Herm Edwards say the same thing awhile back, "Were trying to win the game, everything we do is about trying to win the game"

I wouldn't walk to my front door to talk to Nick Saban. Here we go again.

Is the question whether I'd rather have Bear Bryant or Nick Saban? Are you nuts? I have great respect for Saban's ability but comparing anybody to Bryant is unfair.

No that wasn't the question.
There was an earlier discussion on Saban's media "savvy". (sarcasm inserted)
I live in Tuscaloosa right now and I love the guy. I'm not around him everyday, but I'm close to people who are and it's not so bad so far. The guy just isn't a talkative, nice, "hey how you doing", kind of guy. So what.
He can coach and I had just about enough of "nice" with Mike Shula.
Would you rather date Miss America or Miss Congeniality.

Every clinic I've ever seen Saban at he starts out with program building type stuff. I find it pretty interesting, but that's just me.
I guess if a guy interupted me and ask me to talk about something else then I would probably jet out of there too.

jerk--once again you are wrong. Very few people are praising Les Miles. The public feelings are that this is "Saban's" team and Miles has little to do with the success.

dcOhio,
Maybe you caught him on bad day or whatever. I'm not going to make excuses for the guy. He's 4 million reasons to not give a damn what you or I think about him. I've seen him in a couple of videos, Coach of the Year clinics, and at this year's Bama clinic and he's been great everytime.
Maybe that's partly his problem. When he's a jerk he's at another level than other guys and for the people that only see him that once or here the one story about him then it leaves a bad taste in his mouth.
His wife talked about it in one of his interviews. She was talking about his HUGE blindspot for what people think of him and the way he is perceived.

Again...he fired a woman for buying the wrong snack cakes. He lied to a coach and promised him a position when another coach retired, and then did not give him that position.
Talks a great game

I think you are missing my point CoachD. I have heard all the stories, especially the snack cake thing. I know when he got here he ran a lot of people off. Good people. Some of those people needed to be gone though because we were/are stuck in the same doldrums doing the same thing everyday.
He works, coaches, and recruits. That's it. Nothing more outside of a few public appearances. He doesn't have a warm, bubbly personality. He's an a-hole. But, by God he wins football games and whether you want to argue it or not he's changed a lot lives and built a lot of men.
Just wondering, Coach D are you in the Miami area or Louisiana?

Louisiana.
He wins games. I will agree with you on that statement Built men---That is debatable.
He holds others to a standard he fails to meet----with 100% certainty.

Talks a great game D1ck Vermeil promised Al Saunders the HC job in KC for YEAAAARS.......does that make Vermeil Hitler? Dick Vermeil was not the general manager. It was not his call.
Saban had another coach leave a coaching position at one school, go to LSU in a NON coaching position, with the promise that he would take over the position once the current coach retired in 2 years. That coach retired, and the promise was not kept.
But saban preaches LOYALTY and FORTHRIGHTNESS...for everyone but himself.

Is he a guy that you want to invite over for a BBQ, NO.
If you have ever watched him at practice, and you do not have much of a choice but to respect how hard he works. A Saban practice from a pure coaching and instructional stand point is a thing of beauty. He can flat out coach and win games in College. Like it or not it was Saban that changed the image of LSU and put the infrastructure in place for future success.

I don't think we are going to change opinions of anyone on here.
Personally, if Anthony Robbins preaches (and sells) a positive mental state and poweful mindsets, but beats his wife..........does it somehow discount the legitimacy of what he is actually saying?
Does it make Charlie Weis any less of a 'coach' or a hypocrite, that he espouses discipline and conditioning, even though he is like 500 lbs? I don't think so.

Better lighten the mood a little bit. Saw the Hermanism up above. Any of you other fellows lucky enough to watch the Chiefs every sunday? I swear at some point this season we will probably quick kick on 2nd and 2 so we maintain or gain field position. Playing to win games 6-3 is going to drive me freakin nuts, and I like defense! It's just not very fun to watch. "YOU PLAY TO WIN THE GAME! YOU PLAY TO WINNNNN THE GAME!" If you were in college the Hermanisms would make a great drinking game.

Playing to win and playing not to lose are two different things.
I find it very hard to believe Saban fires someone over the wrong snack cakes- so far fetched and silly it defies description. Making a promise and not following through is possible- maybe that individual did not live up to expectations so the offer was not extended when the job became available. Perhaps there was other influence that Saban could not ignore (AD or coordinator requesting another coach etc)

BEFORE the Miami gig.......................did you "hate" Saban?
If the answer changed because of snack cakes or press conferences........then, IMO, you really didn't have much of a galvanized opinion in the first place.
Again, I'm not justifying anything the MAN does, just the work that is on the field (and managing games).

I have meet Saban a couple of times and in my humble opinion he is a good guy. He coaches his butt off and seems to treat his players and staff well. However, he is not a big press guy and is somewhat shy. Personally I think the guy is getting a bad reputation for being more of an intervened person then some people are.

The Alabama press loves him. At first they hated him, but his press conferences are something to behold. I think after Shula and "uh, um, uh, we were close" that the state media was just clamoring for someone else. Saban challenges and gives some great yet sometimes heated answers. A Bama press conference goes something like this. Saban walks in, ask press how they are doing, ask if they are in a bad mood, talks about upcoming game, talks about players who played well, addresses injuries or suspensions. Opens up for questions. Takes several questions, gives great lengthy answers. Some poor chap asks the wrong question or ask a question that's basically already been answered. Berating ensues and it's hilarious. I mean the other reporters laugh at the guy normally. All I need to know about him happened after the game Saturday. Les Miles is running around the field celebrating, doing interviews, pointing at the LSU crowd. Saban is carrying on lenghty conversations and giving hugs to his former LSU players. The guy was as emotional as he is gonna get after the game. I'll say it again. He's an intense guy that has a hard time handling people that either are just going thru the motions or can't match his intensity and work ethic. The guy wanted some oatmeal creamies. Is that too much to ask?
