A buddy of mine asked me this question last night and I didn't have a 100% answer
Say you have one of your best players that has a knee issue. He is cleared to play through it, nothing torn just issues with cartiledge and meniscus. He plays QB,WR,OLB and FS....we know the game has risks but where can he protect himself the most? He has college potential....with a 4.0+ gpa

We have a good kid who has a shoulder and we plan on playing him at WR to minimize contact. Knees a bit trickier, but depending on what you do at QB I might say there if it's more drop back. Not as many sudden moves, but there's a lot of risk everywhere in this case.

at which position does he have college potential? whatever your decision, make sure you keep him (and his parents) in the loop as to the what/why the decision was made.

Uh... Seriously? Send him to a orthapaedic. You don't have "issues" with your minescus. It's either torn, or not torn. Period.
As far as injuries go, ask yourself these two questions. What if this was my son? What if this was my daughter? How you answer that should be a pretty good indicator of how you deal with injuries to the athletes on your team.

Uh he did see the doc....actually referred him to doc that did my surgery. My buddy said doc said he can play through the pain or have surgery.
Question is if a position that would be better to "protect" him? I know its football and can predict...but some areas that have less...any ideas?

I'd put him where you have some depth. Faulty meniscus has a chance of going at any time (we've had a few kids get through a whole season on partially torn meniscus'... Trainer said go for it, if it tears completely it'll be the same surgery anyway). Again, as long as the kid and his parents are well informed of potential consequences and are willing to risk it, make a football decision.

I'd still send him to another doc. In my mind a guy is either 'go' or 'no go'. You can't hide or protect them from injury. If they are healthy they can play wherever. If they are injured they shouldn't be playing anywhere.
