Next week I interview for (what is apparently) an OC job at a small school that's struggled for a long time. The school has 350 kids, about 190 of them boys, but they've been starting the past few seasons with less than 20 kids total in the program.
They've not had a winning season since 2007 and have been 7-43 since, with the numbers steadily falling. The place has some decent talent on that small roster, but it's hard to be competitive when that's all you've got to work with. I know of other schools the same size who have 50+ every year, but they also have a very strong tradition.
Assuming I land this job, what are some ideas for things I could run by the HC to raise the numbers of this struggling program? Obviously, a winning season would go a long way to getting enthusiasm up, but this school hasn't won more than 2 games in a season in 5 years. I feel like if we can get just 30 kids out, we'll have a decent foundation, while 40+ would be fantastic.

As a head coach, I probably do not want to initially hear your ideas about recruitment unless I am interviewing you for recruitment coordinator or specifically ask you questions about your ideas. I would for sure have ideas in your mind so that you can share them if asked. But if I were to have a candidate walk in for an OC job or any assistant job (of a school I have been head coach at) and hear "I know we can get our numbers up if...." or "our numbers should be better than they are" the HC might take offense to it because ultimately that is his job to recruit and he may feel like you are saying he is not doing his job well. Does that make sense? You did say "assuming I land this job" so you probably only plan to ask if you do get the job.

I'd never dream of walking in there and telling the HC what to do. I just want to have some ideas in the can and ready to bring to him if he wants to hear them, since the numbers issue has been such a killer for this team for a while now. Dressing fewer than 20 players for 11 man football puts you at a huge disadvantage in every phase of the game.

Try to make workouts and practice as competitive and fun as possible. Start working at the lower levels to get kids to come out and be interested in football. Have youth night at a home game and middle school night etc... where those kids get in free. Basically, you have to 1) Develop a relationship with the kids in the school so that they like you and 2) Make it fun enough to pull them away from Playstation, cars, girls, and booze.
