For you guys who do your workouts way early in the AM like us... is there anything you can do about the dew on the ground?
Someone said they used to drag tires over it and that took care of it... but I just do not see how that would work..
Run the mower over it?

This made me laugh because I recently read that Morning dew Is the female equivalent or morning wood

I have beat around the bush to our HC about this 100 times... havent come out and just said it... He wants to instill discipline so we lift at 6am and throw/run at 7am.

I've never understood how that "instills discipline". I hate mornings. I'd never practice before noon if it weren't for the heat issue of two a days. One of my coaches always told us you should practice near the time you want your body ready to perform. NEVER will you need your kids prepared to play at 6am.

As long as I'm head coach we will NEVER start practice before 9 am for two reasons:
One, I hate "Swamp Foot," plus the footballs get wet and stay that way the rest of the day.
Secondly, everything I've ever read is that the optimum time to begin school for adolescents is around then.
Unless you're a college coach with facility and class schedule conflicts, I don't know why anybody would start workouts at 6 am.

All that would instill in me, besides lethargy and irritability, would be the feeling that Football isn't very much fun. Your header wants to be Tommy Tough Guy so he makes everybody miserable? How's that working?

We lift/run/practice early during the summer bc we found that we get more kids there if we go at 8 am than if we wait till later. I think the later you wait to have an "optional" workout the more time it gives the kids to find other things to do (go swimming, play nintendo, fall asleep, whatever) But nothing else is going on at 8 in the morning, so the kids get up and come in and we get done and send them home for the rest of the day. Now when practice officially starts on Aug 1, we start practicing at 6 in the evening to help acclimate their body to the heat and humidity they will feel during the few games.

Coach, have you tried finding a kid that is a total PITA and having him hand dry the field with a towel? Seriously though, I think the dew is just a reality you will have to deal with if your HC wants to go that early.

While we only ask that they give us 2 hours each morning at the most, many complain that it takes up their whole summer.

Seriously though, I think the dew is just a reality you will have to deal with if your HC wants to go that early. I coach DBs and once practice starts we work defense in the morning. I like the dew. It really shows in a hurry which DBs have their feet right and which are getting theirs out of the framework of their bodies. As for working out at 6 AM, I have a previous commitment- sleep.

Dew on the field... tell them to pull their panties up and do the drills. It will sleet, blizzard, flood here during the season. Just get ready for it is what we tell them.

Otherwise they're like the Three Bears. Doesn't mean I'm going to incur Swamp Foot when I can help it. Plus I hear people of my advanced age can have cardiac events if they get active too early in the morning.

Ironically, we find just the opposite-most of our kids dont work, and those that do work at McDonalds or something like that on the evening shift.

I personally just wish it was 8am instead of 6am.

They arent complaining... its mainly me because the balls are soaked... this would be good every now and again in terms of getting used to sloppy conditions... but not everyday.

We go 6-8 AM and our kids like it. I've done two shifts in the past, one morning and one afternoon and our numbers were far better in the morning. I think it just depends where you are at. What works for us may not work for others, do what works for you.

We go at 5pm. We find that most kids do not want to wake up early in the Summer, So let them sleep in. Also many kids in our area have transportation issues. For more than half, they rely on their parents for transportation, so if they are dropped off in the morning, they don't have a way to get home. We get better attendance in the evening when the parents are getting off work and have the ability to drop off and pick up their kids.

I had a baseball coach in high school that used to douse the field with kerosene and light it on fire to dry it for games. If your a fan of fire you can always give that a shot.

How about putting tarps down at night for the spots where you'll be basing your drills out of like passing lines, agilities, and so on?
Obviously won't help for most of the field but you could certainly have dry areas where your centers will be snapping, etc.

We are 9-noon, 9-11 on the field and in the weight room 11-12. Has worked well for us. Our staff meets at 830 to discuss practice or handle an equipment issue for a kid. We don't worry about the heat as we feel they will have to play in those conditions at some time.
Just curious, any of you 6 am guys meet before practice? If so, what time?
