I once heard a college coach comment that, because of all the media coverage, especially on the internet, recruiting has become a separate sport. That was emphasized when I read the local paper this morning. On the front of the sports section there was a long story about a football combine that took place yesterday. On page 3 there was a story, half as long, about the state track championship. They didn't even print the full results, just the winners of each event and the top five teams. The two events took place at the same time less than a mile apart yet the paper, which had no affiliation with the combine, saw fit to play up the bogus media event rather than the real one.
Thoughts?

I think it just comes down to what people want to read and hear about. Not many people care about track and field. They'd rather talk and read about football even if it's just a combine. I live in RI but have a friend who lives in Georgie. Down there sports talk radio isn't dominated by the Falcons, Braves, Bulldogs, GTech, or the Hawks. It's Georgia HS football that is talked about the most.
Because of the media, internet, more teams/games being televised I believe recruiting has become much more competitive. Even mid-size D1 schools now are in the mix with big time schools now fighting over players

Recruiting is the embodiment of "Potential"...which fascinates us much more than results.

I never realized how big recruiting was until I stumbled across some recruiting message boards. Those people on there go nuts over who is committing where, or if someone chooses a different school than their own, it's like they wanna kill the kid.

Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using proboards As I said above, we in America (and probably the world most likely, but I don't live in other places, so I can't comment) LOVE to discuss, argue, debate about "what will" happen. Recruiting and the NFL draft have both EXPLODED with the help of the internet message boards--which flourish when arguing, conjecture, and non-supported information are involved
