Just curious to see how the coaches on this Board would handle this situation.
Up here in Chicago, there is A LOT of talk about the quarterback position - specifically, the Chicago Bears going to the 2nd string QB (Brian Griese) over the 1st string QB (Rex Grossman).
This past weekend, the Bears won the game, but the QB had a QB rating of 1.3, one of the lowest in over 30 years for a winning QB. The bears defense and special teams basically won the game for them. This is not the first time this has happened this year for the Bears.
The Bears are GREAT on the defensive side of the ball, and their Special Teams are VERY good, but the QB & the offense have really gone down the wrong road the last 6 weeks, and they have 4 games to go.
So Coaches, I ask you, what would you do??? Make the switch to the 2nd string guy now, and see what he is all about; stick it out with the 1st stringer and hope he gets it together, or something else?

I dunno.....that one guy, Parcells, seems to be getting along okay after benching All World Drew Bledsoe.
If you have a kid, middle linebacker, who does well, then has a series of below average grade outs, you have to do what is in the best interest of the team and MINIMIZE your liabilities, don't you think?

Rex ain't playing well, no doubt, but Griese has wore out his welcome in 3 NFL cities...I don't think he is the answer and I also seem to remember the big knock on Griese was too many turnovers and bad decision making...heck, we have that already! In fact, Griese has only had 3 seasons in a 9-year career in which he threw more TDs than INTs. In his last 21 games, he has thrown 25 INTs. You take out the two big seasons Griese had in '00 and '04, he is basically even in TDs to INTs. Griese is basically a poor man's Neil O'Donnell. ;D
The other problem is that Lovie has pretty much backed himself into a corner...with his post-game comments, he pretty much said that Rex is the man come h e l l or high water. I would have much rather of had Lovie say something like, "Well, we hope Rex will get better, BUT the goal of the Chicago Bears is to win a Super Bowl and we are going to put the 11 guys who give us the best opportunity to do that out on the field."
Rex has shown flashes of being able to be a pretty good NFL QB. I think the play calling has had a lot to do with Rex's troubles. Also, WHY is Rex making poor decisions? To me, that is a COACHING problem...I can see if Rex makes an isolated mistake here and there, OK...shame on him. But when Rex continues to make the SAME mistakes over and over again against different teams, I think you have to look at what the coaches are teaching him.
The thing the Bears have going for them is they are 10-2 and probably have home field advantage wrapped up with just 1 more win. Rex has 4 weeks to get back to where he was at the beginning of the season. If he can't get it back on track by the time the playoffs roll around, then Lovie has a tough decision to make.

Rex is having a really rough stretch...really rough...what, 17 picks and five fumbles? Id have benched him long ago and run the single wing. Put both backs in teh backfield and see what happens...why the heck not.

But I agree...the Bears have two tough RBs and a big, strong OL with at least 1 future HOFer...get back to running the ball and play action.

I remember Griese beating out Elway heir Bubby Brister for a solid job in Denver and leading Tampa Bay to some impressive wins before losing his job by injury. The guy is signed for 5 years. Bears have the playoffs and division locked up, now the only thing you stand to gain is injuring Rex in the final regular season games. Play Griese because Rex is doing everything he can to LOSE games. in the beginning of the season he didnt just hit the long bomb to Berrian. You guys just notice that out of all the others cause they were eye popping plays. The reason why he did so good in the beginning was he distributed the ball to everyone. He didnt care who he went to as long as they are open. Moose looked like he was in pro bowl form in the beginning of the season. Davis became trash can gold. Gilmore and Reid caught passes. Clark proved we didnt need a new TE. Throwing to those guys set up the deep ball. Now he is just eyeing Berrian the whole game. That isnt going to fool anyone is it WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOUR STARTER PUTS UP A STRING OF POORLY GRADED GAMES???

I don't think the blame is all on Grossman. Where is the TE? What about Muhammad? Berrian? The Bears receivers are rarely getting open. I think that all the attention to the QB position has really made Grossman press.
Let's be honest...when have the Bears had a good QB? You've got to go way back for an answer to that one. He is struggling, but I don't think that Griese is the cure-all. The Bears still aren't doing anything that is going to free up their receivers unless they run the ball more. The only real difference I see if he is benched is fewer turnovers. Which is a good thing, but I think they will become very conservative with Griese. And what happens if he sucks, too. I am sure that Lovie Smith and his staff are more than competent enough to make the right decision.
One of the mistakes the Bears is that they always anoint their savior/starter before any competition takes place. I know teams like to protect their player's psyche. But, what is wrong with some competition.

That isnt going to fool anyone is it WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOUR STARTER PUTS UP A STRING OF POORLY GRADED GAMES??? The reason Grossman was able to spread it around was because of the threat of the Bears' running game. problem was, it never really got established and teams didn't have to respect it. Take this weekend's game...Jones was straight-up GASHING the Vikes...he was averaging something like 7 yards a carry in the first quarter alone. What did Turner do? Instead of feeding Jones about 20-25 carries on a very cold and windy day, Jones ends up with 12! And when Grossman does pass, it is almost exclusively drop back...where is the play action? Grossman is supposed to so good at it (and was at the beginning of the year). Why has Turner gobe awy from that? And don't get me started on the Bears' receivers...take a look at the game at New England...Brady was gawdawful. BIG difference between the Pats and the Bears that night was that the New England receivers made plays downfield. The Bears' didn't make those big plays. Oh...and I see your Henry Burris and raise you 1 Mike Tomzcak!

Oh...and I see your Henry Burris and raise you 1 Mike Tomzcak! Rick Mirer Forget Rex....take ANY kid on YOUR team, if "your guy" is performing horribly how do you justify continuing to put him out there for your opponent to victimize, when you can at least put someone else out there who won't make the same careless mistakes? Is the quarterback play of late jeapordizing wins for the Bears? Yes - without even shifting blame to other positions....the qb position alone is not just below par, but is CAUSING giveaways on your team. Trust me, the quarterback for the Chicago Bears WON'T be winning games for them - it will be the defense, THEN the special teams, then whatever the offense can contribute.

I don't envy Lovie...he is in a tough spot. I just wish he hadn't of been so adament about defending Rex after this weekend's game...certainly did not leave himself much wiggle room.
Other thing to keep in mind is how much pull does Lovie have? Rexy is Jerry Angelo's guy...some of the media guys here in Chicago are saying that the reason Grossman keeps getting the nod is Angelo's doing, not Lovie's.

I agree with you Wildcat, I wish Lovie Smith was not SO adamant about Grossman being the starter. I also wonder if he is being told to start him, politics in the NFL, that is why I thought this would be a good question for all of the coaches to talk about.
My take, the Bears are a great team but they are vulnerable to being out coached. Evidence would be last years playoff game to Carolina. I think a lot of coaches would have changed, by halftime, the coverage on Steve Smith. He torched the Bears, and afterwords Lovie was adamant about the Bears "doing what they do".
Now this comes up with the QB these last few games. I do not know if Brian Griese is the answer, but if Rex is killing you, and HE DID on Sunday, would 'nt you at least make the change for the rest of THAT game?? I would.
BTW - I raise your Peter Tom Willis and Henry Burris and I throw in Will Furrer. ;D

Brophy - GREAT Chart!! It does seem that the Bears found the TE in the beginning of the year, and that was a huge help, and now the TE is M.I.A. I know they will never do Single Wing Calande , so we have to figure something out. It could be said that the TE is one of the keys to their offensive success, and until they find him again, the Bears will be one and out.

They were one of the 3 bands, that our parents didn't mind us listening, too. (which means they were still perverted and wrong, but were able to hide it better). And honestly, they were better after he lost the arm....and before he beat up his wife. Hey, at least it isn't Poison. BTW, nice joke. It made me laugh and then feel sort of bad for laughing all at the same time.

I know he took some flak for drafting Grossman, and I wouldn't be surprised if he has some input.

[glow=red,2,300]Report: Bears backup Griese gets more work[/glow] While Chicago Bears backup quarterback Brian Griese continues to deflect questions about stepping in for a struggling Rex Grossman, it seems that the Bears are at least preparing for that possibility. Griese has been receiving half of the reps in practice this week, the Chicago Sun-Times reported on its Web site, citing an unnamed player. The change in preparation speaks volumes to the urgency the club feels with Grossman, whose disappointing 1.3 passer rating may have overshadowed the Bears' 23-13 victory over the Vikings. The increased workload could indicate the Bears are getting Griese ready to step in. Link - ESPN.com news services

I hope that Grossman is on a short leash Monday night...I would say if he throws 1 INT, he is done. Because, as we have all seen, Rexy doesn't just throw 1 INT...when he is bad, there is no one worse! 1 INT and Griese goes in...get Griese some quality reps before the playoffs start.
