I coach on a team (in Europe) that is always top 1 or 2 team in the league. The problem is all the teams we should be by 30-40 easy we are starting off very slow and then about the 2nd quarter we find our self in a game then do what we need to do.
The team is a victim of its own success and lacks motivation for these games because they know going in we are going to win. Only motivation is when we play the other Powerhouse in our country.
I have never had a team like this that lacks motivation and that starts off so slow.
Im looking for things I can do better (as a coach) and I can get the to do better so we don't worry about who we are playing and we can come out and play like we know we can all 4 quarters.
This is a unique situation for me so im looking for some help
thanks

Instead of focusing on the pregame motivation, what about the day to day motivation? Often the mind set starts early in the week of preparation. Monday/1st day of preparation should be same whether the next opponent is league champ or cellar dweller. The level of expectation for performance is to practice/play better than YOURSELF DID last time out. As one of the top teams they daily objective is to be better than yourself is at the moment.
Every day -- GO CHOP WOOD

We punish loafs and lack of effort during games the following week after our first practice.

The problem is that our schedule does not change week to week on who we play. I do the same thing every week. Im just not sure what to do. The attitude in practice is kind of ho hum but its not like guys are slacking or Loafing. Just not sure what to do to bring a sense of ergency or motivation to the team.

Im paraphasing from coaching and leadership books I have read. Basically, we as a team should play and practice to our very best regardless of our oppentennt. Its easy to go through the motions, its difficuly to stay discipline and motivated day in and day out.
I would talk to the team and team captians about this idea. Reinforce the idea through a slogan, conversations, and so on...

In order to avoid a let down you must never let up. Coaches, players everybody.

That's why you approach it from a self pride angle. You know...the what ever you do, do well...your name is on it, take pride in it...etc. But if you do the same thing every week, then perhaps a little change in routine will get the results you want. Maybe the issue isn't who you're playing, it's more a reflection of HOW you're doing it. Just a thought. I agree coach. I for sure need to change up some of the thing we do and how we do them. Maybe since we have the same schedule every practice everyone knows what to expect and they are just going through the motions.
