I wanted to know what some of you guys do when you find out that a great player in your program is leaving to go to a private school? (ex. meet with parents, meet with the kid)

Ask him not to let the door hit him in the butt on the way out?
Probably just me, but if you don't want to be a part of what we're doing, we don't want you and I'm not begging you or your parents.

Is the decision one that puts the kid in a better situation academically? If so, I don't see how you can attempt to hold him back. At some point it becomes selfish to suggest that he should stay at your school to be a part of your program if a better opportunity exists. Now, if the education at the private school is not up to par and he is being encouraged to move because he is an athlete, and you legitimately believe its in his best interest to stay, I see no harm in reaching out to his parents. You just have to make sure that it is in his best interest to be there.

We face the situation in reverse at times...students wanting to leave our private school to go to public. Here's what we do: We wish them well and that's that. If a kid doesn't like where they are or feel like its going to be better somewhere else, that is their/their families decision to make.

I've watched a few players from my home county leave the county for private schools in a neighboring county. These players aren't slouches either, one was a 4 star athlete in football and 3 star guard in basketball (signed with Miami) and another was a 5 star defensive back that signed with Florida State. Both of these guys would have made a tremendous impact on the teams that they were zoned for.
The 5 star DB would have been a part of a program that desperately needs a playmaker to take the next step and the 4 star athlete would have played on a team that has at least 4 guys with FBS offers for 2014 alone (the team finished 3rd in the district because this district is flat loaded, it typically takes a veteran team to make a run at a district title and if you take stock in this stuff, maxpreps ranked this district in the top 10 toughest districts in America a few years back)

(ex. meet with parents, meet with the kid) I think that you should talk to them if only to find out why their leaving. Don't beg or anything but if they see a problem with your program you need to know that. Don't burn any bridges. Sometimes people find out that the grass isn't greener.

Thanks For the advice!! We have a good relationship with the kid but the private school that he wants to go to is nationally ranked so it's hard to keep the good players in ours.

eh, when I was at a private school we lost a "great" athlete to a public school. He found our rules and standards to be too tough.
