she was openly talking about her sex life, was graphic about it and some kid shot video of it on their phone. dead to rights. fantom - I don't even know if you were talking to me but... I'm out. I don't have another teaching job yet, but not teaching will be better than being here. On the news yesterday - neighbors got so tired of a drug house, that they posted a sign in front of the house that read "Heroin sold here" - www.abc6onyourside.com/shared/news/features/top-stories/stories/wsyx_marion-neighborhood-fights-back-23737.shtmlThis after a few months ago a couple had 800 signs made and posted them around town that said "Herion is Marion's Economy" The drug problem in this town is unbelievable for a town this size. It's almost as open as seeing someone walking down the sidewalk smoking a cigarette...which BTW...I see plenty of students doing in the car with their parents when their parents pick them up from school. This sounds a lot like where I'm at. The culture here is all messed up. I've had several kids whose parents were busted for meth or whose parents were murdered over drug-related stuff. I had a substitute teacher come into my class one day and recognize 1/2 of my students from when she used to work at the county jail and they'd be there to visit their family. Cops have found different meth labs in the parking lot at Wal-Mart and people get murdered/stabbed/assaulted for pills all the time. People deal pills in the parking lots and nobody does jack. The other day I was eating at a fast food place when someone got busted outside for trying to trade a 6 year old girl for drugs. Home invasions to steal pain pills or get money for drugs happen about once a month. Sometimes my students know the people involved, like a few months ago when 2 young men busted into a disabled Vietnam vet's home and stabbed him to death for his pain meds. Some of these kids didn't think that was a big deal. This is in a smal, all-white, conservative country town of 10,000. The school's approach to this has been a joke. We just turn a blind eye to it, for the most part. We look the other way on abuse, on kids who are obviously high, etc. We only bring in police dogs for an "unannounced" drug search once a year. Every year it's on the same day, 4/20, because there's an understanding that if the kids will just not bring their drugs to school that day we can pretend we're cracking down on the problem. I had one kid, who the assistant principal I report to has decided to "save," tell me point blank she was selling drugs at school. When I reported this to admin, nothing happened--that kid's caused plenty of other problems, so it's not like we're talking about some innocent child here. But if you're seen eating at a Hooters in a town 1 hour away or if word gets out that a math teacher used to work as a stripper in a town 2 hours away to put herself through college, all hell breaks loose. A few of the local ministers even preach against the local teachers, accusing us of being out to lead their kids astray. Fantom, you can be {censored} sure am trying to get out of here

Also when I coached at my old school I had some players who all lived within a 1/2 mile of my house.. every now and then one would just walk by, knock and want to hang out... it was weird and a little uncomfortable I like the little bit of separation When I coached at the local school, my old alma mater, I had this happen a time or two, kids wanting to play video games with me. I was about 22-23, so in theory it seemed cool to me. But it was actually quite uncomfortable and weird, as you mentioned. Also, Mariner mentioned not giving out your phone number. I used to do this, and a time or two I was able to have a huge impact on a kid's life because of it. Recently, my family has expanded, and I have also just gotten tired of dealing with parents after-hours, so I have not given it out for three years. In my middle school, they only play for two years. So, in theory, there should not be parents who have my number anymore. In practice though, a former assistant coach who had a son on the team when I gave out my number (and probably would've had it from the coaching gig anyway) sees it appropriate to text me whenever he has something to say. Usually it is something that isn't a problem. Other times he is, at worst, ripping me or, at best, overstepping his bounds.

As a head coach, you're a public figure in the community and a leader of young men and it's wise to be mindful of your words and actions. People expect you to be an upstanding citizen and a role model. If there's anything you like to do that might be frowned upon by those involved with your school or community, I would try to be discreet about it. You may feel that it's no one else's business what you do with your personal time (and I may agree with you for the most part), but trying to make that point probably isn't worth jeopardizing your job. True enough. Here in Mormon run Utah I am very careful when we go out for post-game meal and drinking as a staff. We are in a very tight community where everybody knows who you are and the whole caffeine and alcohol thing is frowned upon. Caffeine? Duece

You should see the looks I get when I walk in with a diet soda or coffee in the morning.
