Spring football in FL, my JV has a consistent 20 kids that show up everyday, but during team and group time our varsity, is borrowing 5-7 players at a time in order to supplement their practices(hold bags, scout team) I have no problem with this, because the varsity is the number one priority and our kids are getting better playing against better competition, but what can I do with the other 10-12 kids, especially when we end up with 8 linemen, 1 rb, and 3 wr that really shouldnt be playing football lol, I would just go back to our indy periods, but than we never get any team or group time. Im open to anything

coach,
jv sucks in spring ball because they have know game to reward them. you will get the majority of your players in the fall when the freshman come out. I would go back to indy during that period. or do some type of game with them that involves scoring. escape from baghdad, oklahoma, pursuit drill.

If the varsity is borrowing guys why don't yall combine both at practice? run two offenses in team or 2 D in team.....I have battled numbers everywhere I have been and the best thing we did for team last year (varsity) is do only half line stuff for team. It takes some time to get it figured out but we had best on best and had a set rotation after x amount of plays in the script. We spent almost a whole day in early season teaching the kids the rotation so that they knew when it was called they just flip over. we had about 22 total on varsity and no JV. again it takes some time to get it perfect especially with the coaches and knowing the rotation of kids (the kids picked up on it fast) but once we got it down it was excellent. passing stuff for our D "7on7" was done in indy and was split between strength side and weakside. again it was best on best then our "team" time for d was the half line stuff and rotated strong runs to weak runs and had three rotations. so it went 1st team strong...then the other side (even though they were "weak side" got reps a strong runs in case of motion/shifts etc... then jv got reps. hope this helps

Are they borrowing kids from the get go, or is it during the middle of practice?
If they are doing it later in the schedule, do your team stuff first then go to indy. Do a backwards practice schedule.

I like the half line stuff tiger, but half the time I don't have enough kids to put in the right positions, so kids would end up doing indy at one position and then end up playing something different during half line, and coachwood they take them at random spots, (like they in an inside drill and they yell "send this guy over" and it just wrecks what we are doing, because I don't have a guy to replace him half the time) so its hard to predict.

Does the varsity and JV plan together?

The solution is for your varsity coach to arrange the schedule in such a way that you have time with them to do some indy, some team and then you can go back to some extra indy when they take the kids away. You need a schedule so you know when you'll have them and when you won't. On the other hand, a lot of indy in spring ball for JV isn't necessarily a bad thing.

I like how Dave Cisar does his team time. He does fit and freeze reps against a cone defense. Have one person holding a bag at the point of attack. Lineman fire out for 2 steps and freeze (coaches check pad level/head placement). If a lineman is blocking a defender downfield, he will fit and freeze on the cone. Any pulling linemen will pull full speed. Coach will blow a second whistle and the linemen will then finish the play 10 yds Downfield. if you don't have a full unit, just run the play with empty spots.
