I'm young, quite inexperienced, and despite both of these factors, have my first HC job for the township 7th grade team (no weight limit). It's my second full year of coaching. I have an offensive "background" and coordinate the O for our team (pretty straightforward spread -- basic Airraid, IZ, etc., hurry up also).
Because of my inexperience, I've sought all freely available film that I can find online -- Youtube (lots of stuff here), Vimeo, very scant NFL stuff, etc. -- as well as capitalized on the position I secured shooting the HS's varsity film (I get full player-level access for bothJV and Varsity to their Hudl for doing this). Despite all this, I really would love to get my hands on as much hard footage as I can, and especially within the general age group I'm looking to coach (say, 6th to 10th grade).
Unfortunately, I don't possess any tape to offer in an exchange, so I realize I'm relegated to a glorified form of begging coaches to let some of their stuff out. Is it reasonable to at all expect that a coach would let out his film like that?
I was, for example, just watching a county-league Spring game today and saw one of the teams (from a big metro area) pretty competently running some stuff I'd like to be able to take a second look at. I've never met the coaches nor do I have any weight nor do I have anything to offer.
If you coached the team and had a 23-year old kid email you for tape, how would you respond?

Most youth teams are not very large staffs and organizations, so they'd probably have no problem, but might not be very expedient in doing so, because they do this in their spare time.

Certainly. And how receptive is a HS staff to this sort of thing? Someone who's relatively a kid asks to see film of your team, and he has no relationship to your staff and no exchange to offer?

Explain yourself and they probably won't have a problem. Remember, you provide them with players, and in many cases they have an incentive to be nice to you. You may find them far more accommodating than you expected. At the least they will almost certainly give you film.

I get requests for film a lot... and have no problem sending it (although I do like to know a bit about who I am sending to).
If it is another HS in our state, I will usually ask for something in return.
Like Chris Clement said- explain who you are and why you want film, and I would say most (80%) coaches will have no problem sending something.

I ask for film from random HS who run the same defense I do.
I have never had a request turned down.

I'd send you whatever you'd want, but I probably don't have much to look at!

I can tell you that most of the coaches on this site are great individuals who love the sport and are open to giving and receiving help. Any coach worth his salt does both. I will say this however......at the level you will be coaching make sure the bulk of your research is geared toward fundamentals and technique. Not only will you WIN with great fundamentals, you will also give your players the MOST important tools to be successful in HS and beyond. And on top of that you will gain a reputation as a great coach because of the fundamental soundness of your teams. Your path to moving up will be much straighter and quicker.

First off, I would say don't be afraid to ask. People should be pretty receptive to helping, they were a young coach too. Especially if your running the same O and D as the local high school, they have a vested interest in helping. THIS ^^ I coach college ball and you would be shocked at the kids who come out of HIGH SCHOOL with crap for fundamentals. Fundamentals are THE MOST important thing in football.

If it is another HS in our state, I will usually ask for something in return. What if it is another HS in your state but their in a classification that you don't generally play. Like a 3A coach asking a 5A coach, or a public school asking a school that's in a private school league. Would you still ask for something in return?

Often times though we have teams that play across classification, so I can usually locate something they have that will be useful. If not, I still like to look at what other teams do- so I might just ask for "whatever you want to send". And there is no private/public here... AA is the "private" league... we are in it.. and we are a public school. All the "big" private schools are in our classification (the largest class "kicked them out" a few years ago, I guess). That is true with out of state coaches as well. I have film from schools in about 30 states (I've probably sent out to that many as well)- I am a film junkie.
