As a longtime DC I'm much too smart to try to answer this question.

I think the defense has to be smarter we don't get to see the whole picture until its underway.
So we have to find ways of outsmarting the offense

When I was in college back in the dark ages I was a much better DT than I was an OL. I was told I was too smart to play defense. Go figure!

I have always felt that putting an O on the field that is productive is harder than putting a D on the field that is productive. Now the only reason is O has so many more moving parts to it and takes longer to get in sync. I have and am a OC and a DC but the question who is smarter is impossible to answer.

I think the better question is who works harder. More prep time.

If I am both... what does that mean? I cancel myself out and am dumber than everyone?

I dont think that one is necessarily smarter than others, I have met and worked for both some really smart OC and DC and some not so bright OC and DC. However, I would say that coaching defense and preparing a team to play defense is much harder than preparing a game plan for offense. Usually on offense you have to prepare for 2 or 3 fronts and 2 or 3 coverages. As a defensive staff you must prepare for a multitude of formations and be sound to each of these formations and prepare your players to stop their favorite plays out of these formations. I think this is much harder and more time consuming than offense. I know our offensive staff meetings are usually about 2 hrs shorter than our defensive staff meetings.

I dont think that as a DC you have to be smarter. I think that you have to be more organized and a bit of a mind reader at times, but not smarter. But I have never been a OC so take what I say with a grain of salt

I also think it makes a big difference if you teach and coach read defense vs assignment defense.

As an O-Coordinator how smart do you have to be. If you use all 4 downs you only have to average 2.5 yards a play.

Wow.... was waiting for that one. Took awhile! Honestly I think Defensive guys have much more work to do to get the game plan in. You can't wing it ever. Have to have your cards ready your report ready and all your film work done. Offensive guys can get by with less effort. Just my opinion

I have coached both sides of the ball. A few thoughts on the subject...
1) I believe offense allows for more creativity and (because of that) probably attracts more coaches who at least think they're smart.
2) In my opinion, defensive prep work is a helluva lot harder.
3) But offensive playcalling is more critical on game day.
4) Getting stuffed on offense isn't as gut-wrenching as your defense getting pushed all over the field while the scoreboard lights up like a pinball machine. I could tolerate winning/losing a game 7-0 as an OC better than winning/losing 49-42 as a DC.

Whoever is smart enough to realize they don't have to be overly smart, just prepared and disciplined.

Thanks for the LIKE DCOHIO I have followed your posts over the last year since joining and I swear we were dealing with the same situations. Loved to read your posts on how you felt about things. Made me feel like I wasn't alone in how I felt about things. Good luck this year.
