Guys, do any of you guys get after it real hard the day before a game? We typically have a situational practice the day before, but am wondering if anyone has moved that a day earlier and then had an intense, more full go type of practice the day before a game? I am looking to see if there is any research on activity levels within a certain period before competition as well. I would be interested to hear your practice philosophy the day before a game. Thanks!

We have a few times in my 14 as a HC gone full gear and got after it the day before the game. One on one type drills or combo blocks. We have played great each time. More for the OL. Normally just helmets and all business and out in less than an hour.

I believe that Oregon under Chip Kelly believed in this idea

No, we don't. However, we insist that they remain focused and there is still a high level of intensity to our practice. We script everything that goes on and they move quickly through all of it.

We did two weeks this year.....started off 2-4, after those two weeks we were 4-4. Now, was that the reason we won the games? Nope. However, we were a lot more focused on those Thursday's which obvioulsy had to play some sort of small part come those next two weeks.
A neighboring school in our area doesnt even practice on Thursdays. It's a well respected program, too.
Bottom line why they don't is they just feel as though it's a waste and a lot of head ache. AT MOST, they just watch film from a defensive standpoint. They go longer M-W and off on Thurs.
Anybody else feel it's just perception thing to practice on Thursday?

We run a morning practice the day before the game. It is 60 minutes and the entire thing is scripted. We are trying to go as fast as possible with regards to tempo. There is no standing around or walk and talk once we begin the practice. Our players love it and also like not practicing the day before the game after school. They can go watch the lower level game or get some homework done.

We do this in the morning before school so they have the rest of the day off.

Because we used to go to Oregon's camp, we learned about this while we were up there a couple of years ago. According to them, there was some theory to it and they bought into it 100%. We adopted this and have found it to be fantastic. We go light on Wednesday in shells, but on Thursday come out in full pads and practice coming out the endzone, redzone and goalline situations.

Injuries are the reason that it scares me to do it all the time but we have always played well. Since we are in Fl dehydration issues also scares me.
