We had a team in our conference do it this year at half time, they got in an arrow formation towards our kids. I didn't see it because I was talking to another coach still on the way out to feel, but several of my assistants were pissed about it. I guess I would like a little bit more background on it (if anyone has it). How did it become part of a football warmup?

As a Christian school, we generally don't partcipate in any pagan pre-game activities. I'm saying this with equal amounts of seriousness and tongue in cheek.

Actually the Haka is Maori - not polynesian. The entire New Zealand rugby team does it before every match they play - it is their war chant. Most (if not all) of the Maoris are Christian... and extremely devout. The HAKA is great... but... I don't know if I would be doing it unless I was coaching/playing with a bunch from Aukland

it is also poly the UH, BYU, and many JUCO teams that have poly, hawaieen, tonga, samoaien players do it. But the All Black rugby team from New Zealand do it before each mach. I seen Trinty High School I think from Trinity do it after a game against South Lake. It was used for a pre war ritual and yes it does have alot christian and mormon back ground I bealive the Hawaieen natives did it before battles. I ask becuase I went to a JUCO with players from Hawaii we never did it but I love things that intimadate the other team. I really like what Maryland did a couple of years ago they got a 15 yard penalty for it though at the beging of the game. Any coaches from Hawaii on this board? Thanks coaches.

We dont use it i am just a OL coach so I really dont have any say. Maryland basically rushed the field after the coin toss and was just going nuts it looked like the coaches didnt care either. And i dont like it just for looks I just like my players getting pumped before games and coming on the field with a swagger alot like the old Miami teams, I know alot of old school coaches hate that stuff but my feeling is if you want to make friends play tennis or soccer football is a intense, violant sport played bye men. I dont think its showing off its just getting ready for battle.

I remember watching Euless Trinity last year doing the Haka before the game with Judson. Cool.We are just a bunch of Scandanavian blonde farm boys. Any chance we should be trying the Haka before games? No. Okay, thanks.

We just played a team in San Diego that did that, I was wondering what they were trying to do. ...lol.... Anyway, we weren't intimidated by it and did our talking the "old fashioned way", with the pads.

To echo Coach Seay, the Maori ARE Polynesian. The Haka originated with the Maori and the version the All Blacks use is copyrighted. UH (Hawaii) just got a warning to perform a different version or be sued under copyright law. Our team does the Haka in the locker room before the game to get themselves pumped up and after a victory before the crowd to celebrate. It is a cultural thing and I see nothing wrong with it. You've gotta be careful though if you do it in public before the game. Sometimes it just pisses the other team off and pumps them up like jhanawa stated. There are many versions of the haka, and teams perform them for a variety of reasons. Here in Hawaii a lot of teams do some version or another of the Haka. Hope this helps.

Here are the All Blacks doing a haka before their game against France. A haka is not necessarily a pump up method or for intimidation, but a traditional sign of respect to their opponents.

Thanks. High school teams really do that? It seems kind of silly. I imagine that if one of our opponents did that before a game our team would find it funny.

I saw Eastern Illinois play BYU at Salt Lake City last year...BYU did it. They have a player from Hawaii or somewhere in the South Pacific on their squad. I guess that is where it comes from.
Personally, I think stuff like that is kind of corny. Nothing could possibly be worse than doing something like that in pregame and then losing like 41-0. Would seem pretty silly to me.

I think ultimately if you are asking if you should; the chances are you shouldn’t. I’m not Mauri/Polynesian so the thought would never occur to me as it’s a deeply held tradition specific to a group of people…. of which I’m not a member. Likewise I wouldn't ask a group of white kids from southern England to start chanting in another language..... however it is cool, and every night I wish I was a fierce looking mauri warrior ! However I think my favourite pregame "routine" was the 1990 French Rugby Union front row, who took to the field with bloody noses, black eyes and cut lips after getting themselves pumped up by having a big punch up before the game with each other..... Now that's a frightening sight! Just my thoughts, of course.

Thanks. High school teams really do that? It seems kind of silly. I imagine that if one of our opponents did that before a game our team would find it funny. I can think of a lot of things in high school and college football that would be considered silly to the outsider, but to the people who are doing it it has significant meaning. I love the haka because it shows how culture and history is still very important to the polynesian people. I wish I could find something similar from my viking heritage...
