As it is april fools day today I decided I'd see how many of my assistant coaches would catch on. I sent them the following email titled "Change is Good" In it I included a PDF playbook of the 1921 Knute Rockne Notre Dame and 1940 Princeton team.
Guys,
Guys,
I've been doing a lot of thinking lately about what we are doing on offense. I know most of our talks have been about defense but I want to give you a heads up on where I am thinking about going on offense. I've been thinking a lot about how can we do something that no one else does and is hard to prepare for. We used to have an advantage when I first got here because we ran Triple and no one else ran it. We could compete with the more talented Central's and Logan's because they weren't ready for Triple Option. That got me thinking, with 3 teams in our conference running some sort of option, 2 teams running some sort of I formation and a wing T team, what can we do that they don't see often. I want something that we can count on every year. We found out last year what happens to a spread attack if you lose some WR's or your QB isn't quite ready.
Here is what I came up with. Let's use our strengths and the strengths that Coach Deleted is developing. He is developing thick kids with mean attitudes. We can't always count on having a QB who is a great passer so lets take that aspect out of our offense. I want to commit to the Single Wing. This means putting Name Deleted back at QB and letting him run down hill. Our backfield would be (Names deleted)
The offense is based off of deception and angle blocks. With our size the deception in the backfield will be even more effective. I've ordered some new footballs this year that are a darker tanned leather so that they blend in with the dark jersey's at home, helping with the deception.
As you can see from the videos that I've included there aren't a lot of plays for wide receivers. This will help us 2 platoon and work those guys as CB's and Safeties more. We've felt that safety has been a weak point so now that position will only have to worry about playing one way. Ted might feel like this eliminates his position on staff but he is still much needed. Other team's have great Wide outs that he can replicate on scout team and every team needs a good financial planner.
I've also included two playbooks that will be a starting point for our offense. After our offensive meeting last week Josh Miska pitched the No Huddle. I'd like to incorporate that into this as well. I think that a no huddle single wing will be extremely tough to prepare for. In 2011 Logan played Menominee Michigan who has run the single wing since 1965. Menominee put up over 500 yards of offense. I am taking my personal day this friday and driving up there to sit down with their coaches and get the basics of it down. Anyone who wants to come is welcome to.
Again, check out the videos below to see what we are evolving into and keep pounding the rock.
