We are practicing at the university for the first time all year and they have turf. My question is how do you limit the turf burn? Other the limit contact do you make all players wear long socks? We just started last week and had a couple players get some burns on their knees from just diving for a ball.

We installed turf (Sportexe) in 2004 and are approaching our 10th season on it. The turf is still in decent shape other than we drag green fuzz into the coaches office on our shoes now as well as the rubber beads. They did a poor job with the drainage system and we do get puddles of water when it rains hard. Because of that, we are looking at re-locating the current turf to another field, re-doing the drainage system, and putting new turf down in the stadium. The new turf fields that we play on seem to have blades that stand up better, where ours has always been matted and laid down.
It does get very hot in the summer, but I have tested it with a lazer thermometer and found the green grass MUCH hotter than the white strips. This leads me to believe that the blades of fiber absorb the suns heat as much, if not more than the rubber beads. Although I never ever run, a pair of ventilated running shoes is a must in August.
