Everyone has certain attributes they want their team to have- discipline, intelligence, tough, physical, etc. my question is how do you PRACTICE or TEACH those things? So what are your top 5 attributes you want your team to have and how do you practice them? An example could be practicing discipline by always being on time, mouthpieces in at all times between the lines, etc. thanks in advance.

Excellent question.
We tell our players that The Way We Are Going to Be Successful revolves around being Disciplined, Effort, Conditioning, and Fundamentals-Execution - in other words, all things we can control and will help us avoid losing. If we can do that, we will have a chance to win.
With regard to discipline we coach against penalties in practice by stressing proper technique and knowing the rules, coaches and players.
We have three drills we do weekly specifically to take advantage of offensive starting count-avoid false start or Illegal Procedure flags.
We don't let anything go - attendance-punctuality, language, taking care of locker room, etc.
Effort of course is related to discipline. Our practices are very fast-paced (even though we're not "No Huddle"!). Kids know the two things that will get their azz chewed will be no 2nd effort or a Missed Assignment (discipline).
I get antsy when I see their feet not moving because they're not getting better when they're standing around. So drills and plays are run quickly or the Lead Dog starts barking. We never walk on the football field. After practice they are allowed to drag off.
Like everyone else most of our Conditioning (better term would be "Player Development") is done in the Off Season. However we constantly stress being in better shape and thus mentally tougher than our opponents so we can Win the 4th Quarter and thus the contest.
Practicing "fast" helps in this regard but we also do a "4th Quarter" period at the end of practice. One day a week it's 40s, the next a "finish" drill - 1-man Pursuit, Arch Drill, some kind of "concealed running." It's not so much traditional Conditioning exercises as reinforcing the idea that "The 4th Quarter is Ours!"
Fundamentals and execution comes from teaching, repetitions - and discipline. We tell kids if we "Do What We Do" with great effort and to the best of our abilities, it will take a very good team to beat us.

I agree this is a great topic.
We emphasize discipline, emotional/physical toughness, execution, and conditioning.
Discipline we take attendance everyday, we get real picky about penalties at practice, we have other scheduled events outside of practice that attendance is required and checked at, and this season we are adding a new helmet reward sticker of no stupid penalties for an entire game. (stupid penalties include false start, holding, personal foul, etc)
Toughness we do our best every practice to break them down aty the beginning and get them mentally exhausted, then physically exhausted by at least halfway through team period. Then they are at that point they really have to suck it up and focus to make big plays even against the scout team. Also to put more pressure on they know that there will be consequences for not being successful each play. For instance if the scout offense scores on the starting defense or the scout defense makes a tackle for a loss on the starting offense they will have to do some kind of physical running. This helps to motivate them that its better to suck it up and make the play they should instead of take a play off cause they are tired.
Execution we do basically the same as toughness in that when you mess up a play cause of failed execution on someones part we do extra conditioning.
Conditioning as you can see happens throughout our practice when people mess up. Also we spend about 15 to 20 minutes conditioning at the end of practice on most days. This may seem like a lot to some people, but we have seen it payoff the last 2 years so much that we will never do it another way. When its the 4th qtr and ours kids look like they are still in the 1st qtr while the other team has hands on their hips and is gasping we love it. one other thing we do during conditioning is the PCP, Pork Chop Patrol, those kids that you know won't finish in a timely manner, we put in a separate group so they don't slow up the others and can still get their running in.
