We are in the process of starting up a booster club for raising funds for our program and helping organize events (ie. 50/50, team dinner, etc). What are some of the main components that are essential? Also... how do you go about with the bank account? Do I go through the district? Thanks

I think this was a thread about a year ago. One important task is getting the right people on your board. Finding that rare parent(s) who is a go getter and who does not have a personal agenda is crucial. Our club runs its money through our business office to make deposits, checks, and donations easy. This also give us tax exempt status. Start out with some goals - why are you raising money? Our initial goals were uniform oriented - we wanted to make sure EVERY team (MS, JV, Var) had good uniforms. We're at a point now where uniforms are purchased about every 4 years - football got new ones this year - and we are able to provide scholarships to deserving seniors, purchase needed equipment, and pay for ALL awards, trophies, letters, and championship banners. Get organized and then grow.

We have an athletic program booster club for the school. However, the football team was getting 0 support from them so a group of parents formed their own "QB Club". They filed as a non profit organization to get their tax exempt status, have a rafle license # and most importantly have that go getter at the helm who just wants to see our kids suceed. Only been up and rolling since last Dec. but seems to be going good right now. Not to mention the fact that I no longer have to organize fund raisers and or worry about handling the money brought in by the fund raisers.

Perception is another important factor. As the AD that helped organize our ATHLETIC Booster Club, I made a point of making sure all sports were included. Obviously I made sure football was not left out in the cold during regular budget allotments but I also added quite a few sports (MS & JV as well as XC, tennis, and golf) during our first 4 years. The other sports, and their parents, could see that every program in the athletic department was treated fairly and the booster club board took care to do the same with their expenditures.
Another thing that really helped us in our formative years was designating requests as Needs, Wants, and Desires. A Need was something that you actually had to have to play the game such as balls, bats, uniforms, etc. You had to have it! Wants were things such as "new" uniforms (sometimes those became needs), extra toys for your sport, warmups, and travel expenses for an out of town tournament. Desires were the big ticket items like a 5 man sled, JUGS machine, Shoot a way, and the like. Our goal - which we DO accomplish each year - was that between the athletic budget and the booster club, we would meet 100% of the NEEDS of each sport and every level. We also managed to take care of a large number of WANTS (on a rotational basis) and still pick up a big ticket item for one or more sports every year. It takes the cooperation of all of the head coaches, the AD, and the people on the booster board.

What are the Pro's and con's of having a booster club just for football. We are in a co-op situation with another school. With a co-op we feel we might be able to attract the sending school's parents better if we have a separate Football Booster Club.
