Is there anything special you guys do in order to get kids interested in helping out? I'm having a tough time getting anyone interested. Is there anything you offer to entice them? Unfortunately, we're not allowed to compensate kids in any way outside of clothes and meals.

National Honor Society hours, community service credit.
Some of best managers we've had were Resource Room kids who wanted to be involved but not play.

I was just talking to a student the other day that can no longer play b/c of concussion issues. Anyway, I know that he's still really interested in sports so I suggested that he consider a career in sports management or something along those lines.
From there, we discussed how tagging Hudl or filming game days or helping to collect travel bags will go a long way on his college applications and essays if he's still interested in the field when the time comes.
He was very receptive; we'll see what it looks like in the fall.

I would suggest that you not limit your search to guys. Some of the best mgrs. that we have had over the years have been girls.

Thanks guys. Good ideas.
I've talked to a couple of guys that decided to hang it up as players, but they haven't seemed real interested.

Yup, we have a couple of those but what I really need is a student video assistant to help film practices and games. I didn't limit my post to that, because recruiting them is one in the same.

Does your school have a video or TV class. Sometimes you can find videographers that way. Also, ask your players if they have friends who are non-athletes who are good with video. Not necessarily for video but know of a LOT of excellent mgr.s who have come from special education classes. May ask those teachers in that area you trust for recommendations.

Video students especially if they want to make a career in some kind of TV or movie field, it really helps their portfolio to have more diversity than just a few crappy black and white shorts.

I guess it depends on whether you're at the collegiate or HS level.
One thing we've done is worked with the sports management professors here to allow people to get practicum hours while filming practices and games. If you're coaching at the HS level but you have a college nearby, you may want to see if you could work something like that out with the faculty.
It may be worth it to try and "borrow" filmers from other sports as well. Find out who films basketball, soccer, etc, and see if they'd be interested in helping you out.

offer them a letter in the sport. Do students really even care about that at most places anymore? Obviously all places are different, but I know letters didn't matter to any of the kids at the last couple of stops I made.
