I am thinking about posting off-season depth charts but I have concerns. Will it create competition or give kids a feeling like the decision is decided? Is it worth the trouble? I don't want to alienate kids but I also want them to know where they stand.
Can you guys give me your pros and cons? Thanks. George

Coach we do a depth chart for coaches only in the spring. For the kids we simply do a positions chart and tell them the door is open and their performance will determine the depth chart in the fall. This way you know who you want running in the 1st groups when you scrimmage run team stuff, but it also gives guys the chance to step up and take a position. We also feel that just giving a positioin helps to breed some competition, however nothing I think breeds competition like pulling someone out of a drill/huddle and replacing them with someone else. Guys hate that and know you mean business, as long as you follow through and make the guy you pulled earn the spot back and not just give it to him the next practice.

That gives guys a chance to see who is stronger, faster, etc. without saying who is starting. So they can be like "oh I gotta get stronger than so and so" before the season or whatever. Things change so much by the season too, its not really worth it in my opinion.
