Do you guys that are HC find time to workout with weights? run/cardio? Px 90 ....or whatever. Lately, I am lucky to get two lifts in a week, 3 is amazing. I am getting older and probably need to deemphasize strength training a bit and put that time into cardio. I just cant bring myself to go running instead of lifting. Anyone make that transition and enjoy it?

I workout (age-appropriate) three times a week in Off-Season as well as doing what my doctor calls "Exercise with a Purpose" - mowing-yard work, shovelling snow.

I definitely stay in shape.
In-season - I workout only on Saturday morning ater film with the team. It takes 15-30 minutes. I try and lift heavy. Abs, Bench, rows, squats, push press, hang cleans, power shrugs, pullups, lunges, shoulder raises, triceps, curls, SLDL, pulldowns. I do one set of each except bench and squat and cleans. I will do a warmup set and heavy repout set with those. The workout is really just a get through it workout. I play basketball most Sunday nights.
Out of season - same workout once a week but have more time to get stronger. Still play bball on Sunday. But I also try and get one to two other quick cardio-weight workouts. Either a 4 minute Tabata or a 300 type workout. 300 except to only 60 to 180. Usually only takes 4 to 7 minutes.

I said I workout - staying in shape is another matter.
"Round" is a shape, right?

I work out everyday inseason and out of season. It is all about it being a priority/discipline I will go at 5 a.m. or 10 p.m. I will do a minimum of 30 minutes of cardio (3 miles) not fast just a good sweat, if I have time i'll go farther if not that is the minimum. Then generally try and lift 4 times a week 10-14 total sets can get it done in 10 minutes if I need to it is frequent but generally fast.

H3LL NO... round is my shape. This morning at 5:30 we had 75 kids split between the weightroom and gym learning how to do proper lifts and how to run the cone drills we do... have to organize and get all name/info down so we can track kids, then my 60 returning players from last year will start Monday morning with all these new kids and we are getting maxes on 4 lifts and 4 speed drills. Gotta get all the info in CPU, organize it, make top-10 lists, print lists, setup workout based on those lifts for the next 6 weeks, then start all over again.
If I worked out, I would cut my family time from 2 hours a day to 0 hours a day... I can get away with it during the season (part of the gig), but not in the entire offseason with a 3 year old daughter(next month) and a son that will be born here in July. Gotta play "dad" too!

I lost 40 pounds in 2011 (my last year not coaching). Worked my butt of to do it (and used advocare during that time). I put it all back on this past season, and have now taken off about half again. I work out 4-5 times a week in the off-season, but have never been good about it during the year. I have been up during every season I coached. I am sure that I should be better about carving out time during the season, but if I get an extra few minutes I want to spend it with friends and family.

I would get up early and run to films (about 5miles) on Saturday or Sunday coaches meetings and then run home. Took me about an hour. Great time to just think about the previous game or upcoming opponent. Would have notes, extra shirt and a snack in a backpack for when I got to school.

Gained a lot of weight last year in my first season as a HC (and I was already way too fat to begin with). Definitely need to make an in-season routine that I can easily stick to. I had never dealt with that kind of non-stop from-every-direction stress before, way too easy to pick up (and not stop eating) unhealthy foods while watching film, planning, meetings, etc. Great topic and awesome tips so far.

I have 3 artificial joints so I need to work out. 2-3 times a week I do up to 30 minutes of strength training. 2 times per week I do stair sprints (my version of sprints). I use peak 8 intervals . (Dr. Mercola) the proper way to burn fat IMHO.

Don't know what Advocare is, but I have used Immediate Care.

I struggle during the season to stay consistent. Heard a lot of coaches do something like p90x or the insanity workout. It's a little easier because you exactly how much time you need to do it. I'm going to try and do it at night once the seasons starts. Have the workout dvd in the computer with the team film on the tv.
I'm a meat and potatoes guy, free weights, heavy lifting, etc. It would probably benefit me to switch it up to something like p90x those months during the season.

I am the assistant HC by title but trust me I handle as much as probably nearly any HC out there
I am young and don't have a family so it might be "cheating" but I lift 6 -7 days a week
I don't get cardio in, I should... its just so boring... I can play basketball all day but don't get many opportunities to play other than with my PE class at times
I just always make time for the gym, I set up each daily schedule and always have to pencil in a gym time for me and I just have to do it, trust me... being at school all day, then running the weight room from 3-6, then driving him around 6:30 i dont always want to go to the gym, especially if it is packed, but I essentially force myself

I am not the HC, but I am a chronologically-challenged DC. I do two things especially during the season. First, I really try to keep an eye on what I eat and drink. This is the hard part. Second, I get up at 4:30 am as many mornings as I can and walk for 30-45 minutes at a brisk pace. I'm not training for the Olympics, so I don't have to run or over-do it. The idea is to walk every day, but I'm happy if I walk every other day.

I'm currently on my second go-round with Couch-2-5K (http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/). At one time, even after the end of my playing career, I was hitting the weight room hard, but that got old after some time. My wife wanted me to run with her and we stumbled upon C25K. It's effective, but long runs bore me. Once I get to where we have to run for 25 minutes, I become bored with it and stop doing it. I've decided that this time I will go with the distance, as opposed to the timed, runs. That way I can give myself a goal to beat, instead of running with nothing I care about aiming for.

I work out, wouldn't say I am in shape. Try to get 3-4 days a week in. That dwindles in the season. I HATE running so I don't do a lot of long runs unless I am feeling especially fat. When I do lift I try to superset everything. I also like to do a set, then go run a lap around the track, do a set, go run a lap etc..... For 4-6 laps. Oh yeah not a HC but I put my time in.

P90x , insanity or whatever I can get my hands on from beachbody.com. I Believe in their programs so much I became a coach with their organization (mainly for the discount). Every program I have used from them is great. I feel I need to be as healthy as I can to be able to stress the importance of nutrition and exercise with the boys on my team. I also like to mess with them that I can out run them at any time. Plus, if I am the scout team QB/RCV or whatever and they catch me they like to talk smack about it. Keeps them interested in practice.

I find that I work out more when I'm busier, so when I was HC of one team and ran from one practice there to being STC of another I managed to still work out every day I didn't have 2 practices. My wife likes when I keep busy.

I do a crunch every morning to get out of bed and then I sprint to the shower because it is cold as hell...
I also run my mouth a TON all day... - lots of verbal cardio...
I too have a family and I am a HC so my time is strained... Could do the 5am or 10pm thing but thats a lot of committment and time and effort...
Rather sit on couch and kill some Ben and Jerry's

have worked out about 45 minutes a day during the season. Getting up at 4:30/5 AM was a pain in the butt some days but its something I needed to do. Years ago the doctor wanted to put me on blood pressure medicine cause I was quite fat. I'm still not trim and lean by any stretch of the imagination by my BP is a ton better even after being a HC with doing the 30 minutes of cardio a day and then some lifting or some other exercise program.
I might always be a bigger person but I admit to taking a small amount of personal pride in when doing a conditioning drill during the season with the team I heard one of the players remark after they were running after me and I made it to the marker that I was faster than he'd thought I'd be. Let me know that he thought I'd be a slow runner but I was glad on the other hand that I was able to surprise him.

I have always struggled working out in-season. It is so hit and miss, but now that I am getting close to 50 years old I need to make it priority. I work out 5-6 mornings a week in the off-season. I pull up Glazier On Line clinics on my iPad and do 30-45 min on my elliptical. Down 24 lbs since Jan 1.

We bought a Gazelle glider and we have it up in our living room. We jump on it while watching Tv. Not too strenuous, but burns calories. We can easily fold it up and take it down the basement as well. It's just easier to jump on it when it's up in the living room because we see it every day.
I've been on a diet since January and have lost nearly 30 lbs. Here's what I do 1. Do not drink calories ( thanks bdud). Only water or 0 calories beverages 2. roughly 300 calories for breakfast 3. roughly 550 calories for lunch and supper each 4. 2 snacks a day between 100 and 200 calories.
Not a HC, but some things I've found helpful

I am a younger HC, 30... In-season I find it very hard to consistently get good workouts in. However, this winter I have been doing the same 5-3-1 program my kids are doing and I love it. I feel it is very important for your kids see you as the coach working hard it the weight room. I can't expect my kids to do anything that I am not willing to do myself...

This is one of my pet gripes among things that I see on the board: I couldn't disagree more. I do try to stay in shape (walk, bicycle, exercise bike) but don't lift. I did my working out when I was a player. I'm not a player any more.

Are you opposed to lifting or just opposed to lifting when you feel someone should be coaching?
