in high school, got on the bus already dressed (minus wearing helmets). We would show up a little later than normal to games (our home field was not on campus) and get off the bus fully dressed, helmets buckled on ready to go. Usually just in time for the opposing team to be warming up and look at us. Not the most comfortable at times but we took pride in it.

Trying to start some tradition here We now use a point system for off season (similar to above from coach plaa) Our camp is becoming "our thing" Started hosting our own team camp here in July 2 years ago, it got pretty big last year and it should be even bigger this year. I have seen nearly every camp in Northern CA area and I can confidently say I think it is dollar for dollar the best overall camp in NorCal Have you seen a Competitive Edge camp? Not saying its better, just looking for your thoughts.

I rarely go to the south bay It seems like a good camp but the cost was $150 a kid Compared to $40 a kid for ours...and you get just as much football Im sure the competitive edge camps have some perks but is it worth the extra $110 per player?

Every road game we take a bucket with our school colors and mascot on it to our field and players grab up some of our grass and put it in the bucket. Our kids through it out in the end zone before they take the field. Although not sure it will happen next year. Wake Forest was not happy with us after we did it there. Really gets into people's heads. They make signs and talk about the bucket. Just one more thing for them to focus on other than the game. First state championship ring had "Fear the Bucket" on it.
We do 7am weights so all of our kids can attend tutoring and/or play other sports.
We walk into our stadium and all of the kids are lining sidewalk giving high fives to our guys. Players and kids LOVE it!
Our colors and mascot for HS, MS, Elementary school, and Pee Wee programs are the same. So our kids grow up in our system and don't know anything else.

We don't have a late/absent policy, or a disciplinary policy (except for legal/school policies). I think in the two years our new HC/OC and DC have been here, we've had one team down-up session for disciplinary reasons. I guess our only one is that if you are absent for an unexcused practice, you miss the first half, then the full game, then the next game, etc. We tell the kids, if you want to succeed, you have to put the work in. If you don't put the work in, you won't succeed. Everything in terms of tardiness or absence, or practice issues have been "play by scenario." I was 100% against this at the start, but this has actually turned out really well. Haven't really had any tardy or absent problems. I think the attitude this staff has is creating a great atmosphere, which has really been the success to this. Also, by having such few disciplinary incidences, when there is one, the kids know they messed up, and it sticks in their heads much more.

I like it. If you were playing at WF, I'm guessing it was for a state championship or similarly big game, in which case I think that would be one of the few times I'd tell someone from a major university to suck it

Reading this thread a lot of memories come flooding back. Establishing tradition is a big reason I was fired. Things we did that people complained about, but the kids loved...
50 mile bike ride fundraiser, more than 25k raised annually.
Thursday practice was all pre-game, to include rehearsal of the National Anthem. I am a combat veteran and believe in my nation and my faith.
Entered the game, through the crowd. wearing large "capes" with hoods over the helmet, (similar to a large raincoat) and the team would jog slowly around the field. This got a lot of attention from opponents, however, it served to help our players focus.
The kickoff team would turn toward our sidelines and raise their hand and call out "Ahhhhh Bonzai!" and bow. The sideline and stands returned the gesture.
Players were required to sing the fight song after the game, together, regardless of the outcome.
Finally, we established a character program, that is to say we had a character period every day designed around a theme that went on all week everyday. This was a quote from our AD, "Coach, you are a great football coach, I want you to DROP the character program and include more football daily. Your job DOES NOT INCLUDE TEACHING CHARACTER, that is up to their parents"
This was a good school with nice kids, and unrealistic, poor, leadership!
Last year this program scored about 45 points and gave up nearly 500. All that we tried to establish is dead. They have no identity now, this was their "new direction."
I am in a better place now and hoping to establish tradition here.

Mariner42, it was for the state championship. State organization wasn't happy either. The fee to "clean" the field afterwards is probably why that tradition may go away. One of the best traditions that I have ever been a part of.

The school I'm at now doesn't really have any traditions. Well, one thing our players do once pre-game stretch is done and they're jogging to do dynamic warm-up is they yell "kick a$$, kick a$$, kick a$$." For the most part just the opposite has been happening as we have not been very good. I hate it, I think it makes us look like idiots, but its not really my call to change it.

davishfc We pull up grass from our endzone and put it in the bucket. We arent talking huge chunks of turf, but grass. Usually fills the bucket. Every kid and coach grabs a handful and puts it in the bucket. We meet, load stuff on busses, go to field for grass, get on the bus and roll out. Our school is only 5 years old. The first varsity season played EVERY game on the road. So the bucket was born. 5 year school history we have an 18-1 playoff record and have won the past three state championships. The bucket has served us well. Was never an issue until this year at the state championship game... The whole field turf thing...

We would juice up the music and do our tackle drills in the weight room and then break out from there and run to the tunnel. Kids loved it!!! We started carrying a radio and cd for the away games and would do it in the locker room or right outside the dressing room if the locker area wasn't big enough. Scored 4 td's on the 1st offensive play of the game that year once we started doing it!

You may want to rethink your tradition development. lol

You may want to rethink your tradition development. lol [/quote] Yeah maybe you would, but where it counts, the kids, they loved it! The loved the sense of identity that was all theirs. Things they did set them apart. Every year they were given the choice to continue these things or come up with something different. They were given the choice. I have seen teams enter behind 10+ Harley's, dance the haka, posture at the 50 yard line, drive a pick axe into the field, and strike objects with a sledge hammer. There are all kinds of things that are done as a team, the point being that they are done as a team and if it brings them together then why hate? Isn't a huge part of the lesson is to function as a team. To set your group apart. To make your group special in some way, shape, or form? The fact is the kids loved it, and when the admin forced them to stop they fought to get it back. Three games later admin allowed the return. I realize that to have it described here is difficult to Imagine, but the kids demanded it, so it was continued.

On Thursday before the game we have a pregame meal at a local church and parents fix the food for the players. We have youtube videos playing all around the room that show big hits and other things like that. We also have either a pastor or coach give a devotional message and talk about how football and life relate to each other. During pre-game after we have gone through all our indo and team O/D we circle up on the 25 and have 2 guys lay helmet to helmet, a coach throws one the ball and yells hit, they jump up and try to run/tackle. It gets the whole team pumped and has even had an effect on other teams.
