I got the documentary/movie "Undefeated" yesterday. Great flick!! It will give some much needed inspiration for us coaches when we deal with those kids that seem beyond help! Here is the trailer: Here is the link to order it www.walmart.com/ip/22152333

What do you do when you have a kid come to you and say
coach the reason I have been absent so much and missing workouts is because I am in some trouble. I got in a hole to a guy for about 5,000... and I have to work the debt off or he's gonna put a bullet in me (work off in this sense is sell drugs for him)

Geez Coachbud what in the world??
Yeah how do you handle that?
First I would notify the adminstration to cover your bases.
If it were me, and you had some kind of law enforcement connections, where you know a cop/deputy personally, I would confide in them to see what they can do to help the kids.
Man i am curious to know if anyone else has dealt with this. It is someting that could happen to any of us who work tough school environments

We had a meeting on a Friday where I told him about my expectations for him in the program. He got caught selling stolen items from Best Buy the following days so it made my decision really easy.

I realize that we all don't coach at Alabama where they get the pick of the crop every single year, but still, I like the quote Saban gave to the media after cutting loose of the 4 who were arrested for assault and theft:
"I also think I'm really proud over the last five years that our team has done a very good job with their personal responsibility and how they've represented the university. Some people learn by words, some people learn by consequences, some people can't learn."
After having just gone through a season full of player discipline issues, and to be frank, a bunch of jack**s, I'm happy to just say good riddance. I'd rather not coach, then have to deal with all that BS again.

What I would do is to treat everybody the same way: set rules at the beginning of the season. they should include rewards and sanctioning. If they're followed, fine. If they're not followed, the kids know what the consequences are. Just treat everyone the same way, even your key players or cussing fighters.
Everybody should be able to at least practice with the team. If for some reason, they're kicked off, they did it themselves, because they know the rules.
