Most schools I have worked at there was a rotation on uniform purchasing. 4 years seemed to be the standard at most places I have been. (this is the school paying for them, not a Touchdown Booster Club)
Anyway I asked my AD today when were we due for new unis and he said it was every 7 years!!! I told him that I could have sworn he mentioned we would be getting them this year. He denied saying that and said that there were two other sports ahead of us, girls basketball and baseball (his sport).
What is funny is that in my 2 years since I have arrived, I have witnessed Cheerleading, Volleyball, Boys Basketball, Tennis, and Soccer get new uniforms, so all teams EXCEPT football. Baseball gets them every year (supposedly they get private donations for them).
I am not a coach who asks for fancy things by any means, i am a bare bones guy and a cheap one at that!! But our uniforms are ragged and the numbers are fading, and supposedly they were "new" in 2008. But I am betting they are older than that.
I want to gather info from you guys to see if this is BS i am getting flushed my way or if a 7 year rotation is common. We are a small private school on a bare bones budget. The AD is not an very supportive, as I have experienced many run ins with him over the past 2 years.
This may be the last straw......just found out that they are wanting to elminate my Weightlifting class as they are eliminating other electives as well.....

As often as I have the money in my account for them... I bought 1 set my 1st year (homes), 1 set this year (away) and will be purchasing an "alternate" this year so I can compete for my kids with surrounding HS's. I have to raise the money for them though. I don't get money from school for the new unis.

We haven't bought new pants since 2003. However, we haven't needed to. We buy new jerseys every 5 to 6 years. I've been coaching at the school since 2000 and we have had two new sets. We will be buying new away jersey's & pants for 2014 and new home for 2015. Money always seems to go to new helmets. I won't complain about that. I wanted new jersey's for 2013 and this was the first time I have really been denied anything, so I will just be patient. We have a school booster that provides money for all sports. I don't need to fund raise specifically for football, which I think is a unique situation.

We did the Under Armour thing like you did, and our kids definitely responded well. Skyline gets new ones every single season, but the kids buy them and keep them. They are paid for in their football fees. We fundraise like you do, but are thinking about just putting them in the fees.

So what do you guys do as an alternate if your school colors are apparently green and white?
Or any other color and white are the school colors?
What is the alternate look?

That is what the kids want. It's my first year at my current school. We are black and orange. In the past, the school has worn orange. Our new staff this year ordered all black. The kids like it, and my HC really hates orange, so everybody is happy.

We find the minimum order to get the manufactures discount and order than number of replacement jerseys and pants every year. This is cheaper than ordering all new sets. We usually pay for this out of our own money

Our school colors are Kelly-Green and White... I am using grey as my accent color on stuff (Stripes, stitches, etc...) so I am looking at doing greys. The kids at my school ABSOLUTELY care about jerseys. Every single one of them thinks Oregon is the god of football because of their uniforms and helmets. I don't plan on trading out any of ours. I want to use all of them and have them mix and match. Last year we wore all 4 combos with our jerseys and the captains get to select which combo we wear each week: By getting the 3rd set I would be able to have 5 more combinations... 1) Grey on White 2) White on Grey 3) Grey on Green 4) Green on Grey 5) All Grey 6) All Green (already have) 7) All White (already have) 8) Green on White (already have) 9) White on Green (already have) Next year if I get these, we would be able to wear ALMOST a completely different uniform each game... if I ever get my 3rd set (old coaches used to use the Miami orange in the 90's when "the U" was big) then I'll have 2 years worth of uniforms where they wouldn't wear the same combo 2x in many of their varsity careers. We only replace the ones that are destroyed in these sets and don't let the kids buy them unless they pay what it would cost to fix them. I have a lady who does the University of Utah's jersey repairs and she does ours as well. Any small tears or holes get sewn up immediately and we end up spending about $75 a year to keep each entire set in perfect condition. Usually the kids who "wear out" jerseys like to buy them, so we end up with a perfectly new set every 4 years anyway at almost no cost to us. Unfortunately in our area, the "open enrollment" issue is forcing us to all compete for players and I know of plenty of guys who actively recruit players from out of their boundary. We don't... we just try to provide the kids THE BEST STUFF and hope that draws 1-2 more athletes every year until we can turn the program around. We are purchasing the "Cam Newton" cleats this year as well. UA never made green before, but now they do. Kids voted to drop sweatpants and apply the $50 extra bucks to getting the upgraded cleats. I think they are sweet, the kids chose them, and I get more questions in a week about "I heard we are getting ____________" than I ever do about "I heard we are doing _______" Smoke and Mirrors... convince them that they want to come and they will get better by just being there.

I have been told by our AD that football will probably NEVER order a new set of uniforms. Too much money. We have set a fundraising goal this spring to order new ones. We have been playing football here since 2005 and have simply replaced ones that get too beat up to wear. In the time since we have had football, basketball has had at least 3 sets of unis and new warmups nearly every year.

7 years, been there done that, it doable but they will not be in great shape if you need to hand them down to JV or 9th grade when they are done.
Fundraising for football uni's is become a norm

One easy way to do this is to have your seniors buy their jerseys. Then, the money goes to buying replacements of the same number. One school I was at actually had the kids purchase their jerseys as sophomores, because then they were theirs for the duration of their careers. Problem with that is you end up getting a lot of kids who quit still wearing their jerseys on game days...

Our unis were 7 yrs. old then we got there and 10 when we left. All of a sudden the booster club miraculously came up with the money needed for new unis. My advice...GET OUT. If football has ANY other sport ahead of it for anything, THEN GET OUT. If you are an A.D. then football is paramount, it supplies you with ALL your funding, so you better make it important. If you work for an A.D. that doesn't agree, GET OUT. I've worked for 2, and I can tell you this, it sux. Duece

Thanks Duece,
Yeah i am planning on getting out. I am tired of this fight which I cannot and will not ever win. The baseball coach/AD has won several championships and it is a "baseball school". The kids do not understand the type of work committment it takes to have a championship caliber football team. They have always been successful in baseball without working out with weights, or doing any type of offeseaon conditioning, so the mentality is just not present.
Today the AD said "Hey you can order some new helmet decals if you want". So i will order decals of a football coach bent over and a large baseball bat behind him....that will be my gift to leave!! LOL

The school has had the same jersey design for years, so all we do each year is replace the beat up ones and in the last few years order a few more sets as the program has grown.

Each kid buys their own uniform with their name on it each year. We had the same JV jersey for probably 5-7 years though. Big 4A school in the Greater Houston Area.

every school and AD that has their stuff together will usually have a 4 or 5 year rotation, most schools football funds most of the other programs, if you AD doesn't care about football , leave now, the AD where I am now is great. buys uniforms every 4 years or so, sometimes every three, buys all coaches a shirt or jacket or something every year, if you win district title buys you a jacket or something for winning. at the end of the year if extra money is left over in the account will ask if football needs anything . we uaually get 10 -15 new helmets every year, and 10 20 new shoulder pads every year, but we fund raise and buy a lot of things our self so if we ask Ad for something we usually get it. we have bought an endzone camera, headsets, and other misc things ourselves.
