Looking for creative ways to add some more competition to practice next fall. For those of you that score practice, how do you do it? When you are a one platoon team, how do you determine teams, what you score, etc? Do you score the whole practice? Any help would be great!

During our offensive and defensive team periods, we have 40 yard scrimmages. Scout "O" vs 1 Defensive unit, the offense has 4 plays to get a first down running scout offensive cards. If they pick up a first down, we reset the downs and keep working our way to the endzone. If the the defense stops us from scoring, then everybody who is not on the defensive unit has a conditioning activity. And if the scout "O" scores the defense has the conditioning drill. Then we move the ball back to the 40 and start over again till the period is over. We do the same thing for Scout "D" vs 1 Offensive unit with the exception the offense only gets three downs to pick up the first down.
This has worked really well for us. We are a one platoon team and you have players running in to fill the scout teams. A BIG key for our success doing this is to have competiitive coaches running the scout teams.
Pro's 1. Competition at practice! The players don't want to do the extra conditioning - but most of all don't want to lose. 2. Player Development of your non starters. No longer just "hamburger" squad. 3. Players motivatiing each other. 4. Down and Distance situations built in. 5. When the 1 offense scores - we run a two point play or kick the extra point.

Attachment DeletedThis is what we use to score practice. We stole this idea from the University of Oregon, and tweaked it to make it work for us. We have a two "managers" that do this. One keeps score, and the other one walks around with a megaphone announcing it after every play.
