worked with both of those types...always try to be the second list when I can.... i would add a ninth one to the second list.. a coach that will fight for what is right for his/her players

Unfortunately, I have worked with more of the former than the latter.
I think you can break coaches into two subgroups- Ego Driven and Player Driven. I know a lot of coached who claim to have a passion for the game and for working with kids, but this only holds true when they're winning. You throw a few losses in there and they become ego driven very quickly. I think you can best judge a coach by how he deals with losing.

Thats a very good list. Should be a self evaluation for every coach, and for head coaches - you might consider having your players and assistants grade you on those traits.

Great list, I have been at my current high school for 4 years now, and since I have been there, there has been a lot of the first 1-8...Took a terrible losing season for it to be seen by the HC....

Missing a couple: Old coaches who think new coaches know nothing. Coaches who verbally berate other coaches in front of players. The former HC I worked under was a whole bunch of the first 8. If he would have been a lot less 6 & 7 he wouldn't be the HC I used to work for. Of course his behaviors may have submarined all of us assistants from a chance of replacing him.

I hear you Knight....I am ONLY 30, our HC is 36, I am not always right nor do I claim to be, but it is really hard for him to take what I say into consideration. I love where I coach though, great kids, good community....

great list - in my humble opinion, there are 2 categories of coaches - a) coaches that learn from their mistakes/successes and continue to become more efficient & knowledgeable about coaching - then there are b) coaches who continue to make the same mistakes their whole career and never progress into what they could be - a lot of times, it is just a matter of being hard-headed - they think it is a sign of weakness to ask questions and to continuously learn new and better ways to coach - they have to be right, even deep down sometimes they know they are wrong
playin' it cool - Luke
