make up some name.....don't put anything that relates to anything.....
i coached at a school that had a county rivalry..... the game was called the "possum bowl"......i don't know why......i don't think anybody else knows why........
if you make a trophy and put an armadillo on top of it, kids will be excited about it........

Elkhart Middle School Championship Trophy (use an actual trophy)
The Old Oak Bucket (use a wooden bucket with annual winner recognition)

What high school or high schools do they feed into? It might be cool to name it after the HS mascot, i.e. "Future Warrior Cup" Another suggestion might be the Elkhart City Championship Trophy. You could even go a little Dances with Wolves and have each member of the winning team take a bite of an Elk Heart after they win! Hopefully, my humor shines through.

Most of them go to Elkhart Memorial Chargers (Charlie Horse is the Mascot), but some go to Central High School Blazers. I believe most of Pieer Moran goes to Central So that wont work. Also, a few of my kids and a few north side go to central. Should we sacrifice the elk after the last game and then take a bite or just have a elk heart ready?

It's better to have it warm, so a sacrifice after the last game would be perfect. Maybe parents would like to help in the cleaning of the elk and the mounting of the head to hang in the coaches office?

We already have trouble getting parents to even show up for the games, so maybe if we tell them about the sacrifice they might show up.

Talk to some of your local service clubs (Elks, Lions, Rotary, American Legion, VFW etc. ) and see if they would sponsor the trophy (i.e pay for it) and name it after the club. "Lions Cup", "Elks Trophy" and such.

stinky sweatshirt (has logo of both schools on it), golden thrown (gold painted toilet seat), rubber chicken, broken mallet...like other coaches have said, it doesn't matter what it is, kids will be into it.

How about the St. Joseph River Rivalry for the river that runs through town? or just the Superintendent's Trophy or the Mayor's Trophy.

Really, to get this thing started, you and your kids need to go steal something from another school. Then after a awhile, you get to where you just play for it every year.
Besides, nothing bonds a team together like committing a felony (loose lips sink ships).

If you do a little bit of smooth-talking with a local business, you can usually get them to "donate" the money for a large trophy every year, and just put their name on it... Also they will usually donate a HUGE plaque that you can put the winner on each year that each of the schools can keep a copy of it at their school.
"Sutherlands North/Pieer/West Rivalry Trophy" or something like that.
Let them name it, and use it as a tax write off.

My old school we played a neighboring town and we had a river that ran threw both towns, so we made up a 3' paddle and painted each side of the paddle in school colors and put a helmet decal on it and call the game "The Battle for the Paddle"
Could play for an old lunch bucket painted in the 3 school colors.

Thanks guys.
Now I have more ideas then I know what to do with, but please keep them coming if you have any more.
One good thing is a varsity coach gave us this idea. He happens to be a shop teacher too. He said what ever we decide he can make the trophy, so I am not worried about price for once.
I am leaning towards the sacrifice or the felony though. Man you guys are nuts.

1) "The 50-yard Lion" -- trophy with a large lion and it is painted in school colors of the winner or each year the logo of the winner is fashioned onto the lion in some manner. ... or , just use plaques on base of trophy & lion remains unchanged 2) "Elkhart Classic" -- standard trophy that may depict more the heritage of the town itself 3) "Battle for the Golden Elk" -- trophy of an elk. similar to 50-yd lion trophy setup 4) "Battle for the Ol' School Bell" (or battle for the bell) -- the "ol' school bell trophy" ... actually, think this one exists between 2 schools already (maybe troy state and someone else? ) additional thoughts: play up something with "antlers" to tie in the elkhart city name. "antler arch rivalry" ... blah, blah, something like that. use the city: "the elk's heart trophy" ... something on trophy describing bravery, passion, heart, commitment, etc....

Michigan and Ohio wrestlers have an annual tournament called "The Boarder War". If your schools are in close proximity of each other, you might want to consider this one. I too like the three sided trohpy idea. Good luck, sounds like fun.

In wisconsin i know there are traveling trophies. one is the little brown jug. it is a old just they have been using for 60 years. each schools colors and logo are on the jug adn the scores of the games going back to 1948.
the best one is what is called the lunch pail. the lunch pail is painted with each others school colors and logo. the idea from the lunch pail is simple, if you think you are going to win, you fill it with good stuff to eat after the game infront of the other team.
if you are having a bad year and you have the pail, you might fill it with bad stuff to eat. however one has to be careful as you might just win and then you have to eat the bad stufff infront of the other team. the rival games is a back and forth prospect between these two schools. throw out the records. the lunch pail also is fought for during a wrestling dual. so you have the opportunity to win it back if you lose it or keep it if you won in football. what makes the lunch pail rivals good is they are 8 miles apart, so pride is at stake here.
I know two schools who wrestle for the golden shoe. they have been doing this for 30 years. it is a bronzed wrestling shoe. much pride for this trophy as well.

Just went on Wikipedia and looked at the history of Elkhart. Name the trophy after Chief Elk Heart. The town was named after him!

"The Harrison Trophy"
Named after William Henry Harrison, the first govenor of Indiana who defeated the Shawnee on the banks of the Tippecanoe River, who later became known as Old Tippecanoe. See, call it the "Harrison Trophy" because it is the first and he was the young Tippecanoe (just like JH kids) and not officially Tippecanoe until he defeated the Shawnee.

Find something that has a historical meaning to the town. (ie Philidelphia and the Liberty Bell.)It doesn't have to be that huge but something that the town could be proud of.

Get a gas can and use some metalic spray paint to make it gold/bronze or whatever. The "Fire Starter Trophy" can light a fire under those who want to keep it or light a fire for those who want to earn it.

How about letting the town pick the trophy or any other object, gas can, axe, plaque trophy or what ever, and also name it. Hold a vote were people write in, text in oremail in there vote andlet that be the final decision.
Or get together with the other coaching staffs, have each school choose a trophy and or name and let the student bodies vote for there chose or have a committe decide.
Or try any combination of the above.

Just went on Wikipedia and looked at the history of Elkhart. Name the trophy after Chief Elk Heart. The town was named after him! I Second this, nameing something for history is always better...it might help get more of the community involved. Is their a local historical society? Chief Elkhart Trophy Chief Elkharts War Ax /or tomohawk Chief Elkharts Drum Also like the river one mentioned before or just get a mounted Elks head and play for that, put the scores every year on a new plate below it.

maybe you could do a trophy with 3 feathers on it... each feather is one of the schools colors.
something that would be really cool, (but almost impossible to do, but maybe it will spark another idea) is to have an empty indian headress, and every year, whoever wins gets to add a feather of their schools colors with scores of the games on it... or have a full headress and each year the winner gets to color a feather and add the scores.. something like that.... thesse ideas would be awesome, but probably a little more than what you are wanting.. hope this helps spark some other good ideas...
