Some of you may be blessed and have kids that are natural leaders. Others may have developed a program that creates a culture where kids learn to become leaders by their older teammates.
Then I think there is the majority of us. We don't have kids that are natural leaders. Maybe our best players are quiet or introspective. Or maybe our best players are self-centered a**holes. Or they confuse yelling and belittling their teammates as leadership.
Some programs have leadership training programs. I am wondering, what have some of you coaches done to instill leadership in your kids? What has worked - and what has not?
A secondary question - do you let your kids choose their leaders, or do you appoint them?

I have some stuff I will share, hook me up with an email.
I choose 10-15 kids to go through leadership training and then let the kids choose from that group.

I love what you have put together- and thank you very much for sharing. Can I ask - how has this impacted your kids? Have you seen a difference in their behavior and leadership?

This will be my 4th year of using it. Great results the first time I used it in 2003, kids really overachieved and we went 9-0. 2004 was at a new school as I was a new HFC, lot of problems, no help from program. Last year kids took some responsibilities and this year I expect great things.

SLS, Did you do the Leadership program with you 10-15 leaders during the summer? The season? How did you choose your 10-15? Did you do Juniors and Seniors?

we did something in the past that proved fruitful.....
In the off-season here, the "leadership meetings" were open to all upper classmen or returning Varsity players. Once a month, at 6 am, they met in a teacher's room, where curriculum pertaining to the qualities of leaders was reviewed and led an open discussion each session. Kids offered examples of how it has been used how they could use it and so forth. This 'leadership counsel' was given carte blanche authority when making team decisions and such. The one caveat, to remain on the leadership counsel, you had to have 100% attendance and above 85% in off season weight room activity.
Most leaders are developed over great parenting, with this approach, we can at least role model it and teach the qualities of it, so they know what it takes to lead.

we have a daily meeting with the entire varsity team( in class) we use teh CTCL cirriculum. I think that it is the most important thing we do.

We are currently in the middle of Captain's leadership training. This is the first time I've attempted anything like this. We are using Jeff Janssen's Team Captain's Leadership Manual. It is a great resource. Right now I'm asking my captains (who were nominated by returning players and selected by the coaching staff in May) to meet with me once a week for about 1-2 hours for 10 weeks. Each week we cover one of the chapters in the book. The first 5 chapters are about leading by example, the last 5 are how to be a vocal leader. My captains and I have had some great conversations. Next year, my plan is to do something similar to what Brophy described in that I want to meet with players - any upperclassmen who wants to -in my classroom in the mornings during the spring. The material in this book is valuable for more than just the captains in my opinion.
On another level of leadership in the program we establish a Unity Council at the beginning of the season. The three captains are automatic members, but the remaining 7 positions are voted on by players. 1 senior, 2 juniors, 2 sophomores, 2 freshmen. This group serves as a liason between the coaches and the players. They meet each week, Thursdays before team dinner. They play a role in decisions and discipline in our program. I've been very pleased with how it has worked.

I am compiling a leadership manual that I am going to be using with my kids starting in about 2 weeks. It is a powerpoint presentation with preprinted notes and classroom exercises. It is meant to be a discussion-oriented training method. The sessions are meant to be 1-1.5 hours at a time for 4 sessions. This will be the first time that I have run it, so it may go a little longer. My kids are HS varsity. I am willing to share the materials with anyone who asks with a couple of conditions:
- the materials get used this summer/fall (if you are not going to use them, I would prefer to give you a copy of next year's editted version) - you give me feedback (what was effective, could be improved, etc.) - Your usage only - no outside copies.
Just drop me a PM if you would like a copy.

Bigger, Faster, Stronger has their "Be an Eleven" manual. Roger Freeborn is a good contact.
Any of John Maxwell's books on leadership and teamwork.
Chris Creighten, head coach at wabash College, has some great ideas abut developing leadership that he uses with his team. He has spoken at the Inidana Footbal Coaches Association clinic and is willing to share.
Any of these resources will help you get started.

Thanks for the love saintrad.
I did develop a package and used it with my kids this last year. I had really good feedback from them and I plan do conduct a similar class this year. I still have to update and change the material - which will probably take me until March/April.
I am getting some requests for my material and I am glad to share. BUT. Last year I shared the material with several coaches with just a few conditions . . . Well, I got nearly zero feedback. Let me say that if you want to material to add to your collection of coaching stuff, I am not ready to distribute the material in that fashion. This is not a xeroxed playbook.
What I am trying to develop is meant to be very comprehensive. It is meant to teach leadership in a classroom environment - and it has value. There is a powerpoint presentation, and hand-out notes for the kids where they fill-in key words to follow-along with the presentation. The presentation uses multi-media to keep their attention and uses exercises to drive home points. I am holding open the option that I may publish it and charge a few bucks. The feedback from most of the folks who have seen it has been to do exactly that.
While I appreciate the requests for my materials, I am again in limited distribution mode. If you are willing to meet with a few requirements, then we can talk about your taking the material: - Use the materials with your kids this spring/summer - No copies or futher distribution - Give me copious feedback.
Thanks Coach Parry
