What are your pre-game rituals? Do just try to relax, or do you watch film.
I am a walker. The other coaches on the staff rag me a little because I can't keep still before or during the game.

Done watching film by game day. Relax or, more importantly, make sure QB is relaxed/has no questions, etc.

I'm a DC but I'll say that I just want to relax before the game. I'll just sit around and talk with some of the other coaches. By then the hay is in the barn so why worry?

I have many rituals on game day. Too many to mention. I am a superstitous freak. Not sure why, wasn't brought up in a house of freaks like me. But was that way all through athletics until I became a coach. Guess it carries over. Most of the superstitions help me to calm myself I think. Not sure

The OC that I learned under taught me a trick. Listen to James Taylor.....it brings my heart rate down.

take a nap in the office right after school, then get things organized to take to the field, check on headsets, footballs, qb, etc.

I try to sneak a nap in whenever possible. By Friday I'm wore down, and know I'll be up until at least 3:00 am. A short nap refreshes me and helps me to be focused. Then I like to hang out in the coaches office and B.S. with the other coaches. The closer it gets to "go time", I start to need to walk around to deal with the nervous energy.

I'm a nervous pacer. Can't sit down from 4:00 on. Lots of BS and joking with the coaches. Like the idea of listening to some James Taylor.....could mellow me. Hey, I'm not going to play, why get jacked up?

After school, I go spend an hour or so at a local sports bar/burger joint. I bring my call sheet, and on rare occasions a laptop with film. Sometimes I will bring a teacher or someone non-football related with me. Mostly just need to get away from everyone else and gather my thoughts. I get back to the school about 3:00 before the game. From that point on pace a lot and keep to myself.

I am on a young staff and most of us are not too far away from our own playing days. Some of the coaches listen will crank the hard rock to get excited and pumped. Kinda silly when I think about it. Our locker room is dead silent but the coaches office is rockin'. I, on the other hand, am way too much of worry wort and need some quiet time to think. I usually get out of the school and get something to eat then come back to the office, look over my call sheet, and BS a little. The planning is over so very little game-plan talk is happening.

It is my only free time all week, so I just relax look over the call sheet, sometimes I will take a nap. I love talking to the players about plays or them visualizing what is going to happen(only right before the game). Most of all I like to talk to the other coaches and keep the coaches office loose.

At home games I will go for a 3-4 mile jog. It is very relaxing and allows me to calm my nerves before a game. I just gather my thoughts and enjoy the moment. Plus it allows me to get away from all the potential chaos that tends to be going on at the office. Let the assistants put out the fires for a while.

I make sure the HC doesn't need my help for any logistics (copies, wrist coaches, extra equipment, train bag, etc.). Then, it's time to just chill and talk shop with the other coaches. Not about the specifics of the game, but things like what time to break down film in the morning, who's driving the SUV, install for next week, etc. The other thing I will do, is if I have a kid that needs some reminding on X's and O's stuff or things of that nature, I will give them a quick quiz.
