Love your approach. That is our approach too..
1. Run the ball 2. Stop the run (YOU HAVE TO IN HIGH SCHOOL. HAVE TOO!!) 3. No turnovers 4. Create turnovers (we were +21 in turnover margin this year) 5. Create points off of defense (Scored 9 defensive TDs in 13 games)
We went to our state semifinal game this year for the 2nd straight year (We lost on a FG with 1.6 seconds.. Had lead whole game)
We started a sophomore QB mid season. Our offense went 31 quarters ALMOST 8 games without a turnover. That was huge for us 2nd half of the season. We had 9 turnovers in 13 games.

4/5 State Champions also had more passing yards than their opponent. So pointing to running and not passing as a cause of winning seems arbitrary. The losing teams had more passing attempts in general but thats always going to be true because teams that are behind need to throw and has less to do with the teams general style. This also makes it more impressive that the team with more passing yards won 4/5. I also don't understand why running on offense and playing good defense are considered linked by people. The implicit assumption I guess is that running isn't as effective on offense as passing so to win running you need a strong defense?

The implicit assumption I guess is that running isn't as effective on offense as passing so to win running you need a strong defense? To win you need to concede less points than your offence, so there is a correlation between O and D. Especially at smaller programms where you have many 2way players. The way that the game is changing to a higher play frequency and higher scoring playing dominant defence may take on a different meaning. But one constant can be said in football, to win big you got to have good defence.

. I also don't understand why running on offense and playing good defense are considered linked by people. I believe it is the physical nature that these two share. Running the football requires you to physically move your opponent into new space against his will. Playing good defense (particularly by the defensive front) requires you to RESIST this movement, or overpower your opponent as you rush the QB.
