What I wear is essiential to being a Successful Coach:
* Old school "Bike" brand shorts with the elastic waistband and I wear them above my navel. * Striped tube socks which are pulled above the calf * A Team shirt that says "Warriors Football" and has a picture of a football on it in case people dont know what I do for a living *Wrap around Oakley shades that I have had since 1992 * Boonie hat (has to be camoflage) * Fox 40 whistle cause it is the loudest whistle on earth! * I do not wear a watch as I found that if I wear one the kids are constantly asking what time is it? (like they have a hot date or something)
Later in the season when it gets cooler I wear:
* actual practice pants like the kids do...silmilar to Knute Rockne's and coaches dress back in the 1930s * Black socks that are again pulled above the calf * Black cleats in case i get the itch to showcase my athletic prowess * The same wristband as the QB wears * A sweatshirt that has my name on the right side and again "Warrior Football" with a little football on the other side. * I go with a baseball type cap and I wear a different one each day. I have a vast collection of hats from college, pro teams to various schools I have coached at in the past.
OK I think that about sums it up for me!!

I usually write on the back of my practice schedule on my hand and try to figure out what it says later.

1 - Huey how did you get that picture of me?
2 - as for Iphone - I use it for many reasons as the HC - parent contacts if needed, check film on HUDL, call AD if something is eff'd up, timer, stopwatch, I have even updated the website with new info as I walk off field, call kids who may be absent, also as a general CYA...
2b - might even bring out ipad this year for scout team... for scout o, pictures of formation with hudl video of play right after... scout d could show them picture of alignment per script
3 - @mariner - I have a pen because like to write down changes to gameplan, special teams, etc...
4 - did not mention but try to wear school gear daily... also like to wear opponent stuff if I have it...
5 - love the fines haha, I would be broke

I won't repeat what others have said that are on my list as well but I will add one of my favorite things for the practice field. Here is a shot of it from a Hudl presentation that I have in one part of a clinic talk about making coaching life easier. It's a 2-piece collapsible pen made by Zebra that hangs from my lanyard. No more fishing around in my pocket for my pen, no more risk of your junk getting skewered by the pen in your pocket when demonstrating things or sitting down!! It's always right there in front of me. Easy on, easy off. www.hudl.com/presview/114009www.zebrapen.com/products/pen/f-301-compact?c=30

I write a lot on the back of my script. I'm a rb coach, so I chart fumbles, missed assignments, mental mistakes, etc...

Apparently. But I'll give it a shot. I carry a sack pack. No it's not a fanny pack, man bag, or satchel My backpack just happens to be Under Armour although a lot of companies make them. Smaller than a back pack but has a big pocket with drawstrings. You may see some of your kids carrying stuff in them. In there I have: offensive play sheet whistle stopwatch pen/pencil scout cards cell phone (for injury emergencies) school keys I still tuck practice plans into my shorts. Old habit plus it's right there. I like having the sackpack because I can quickly access anything I want. The biggest key is demonstrating is so much easier because I can just ditch the bag and I'm free of all of that $hit hanging off me or flying out of my pockets. I know coaches know what I'm talking about. You get fired up, you demo, you're showing the kids how trying to be all serious and then all your stuff falls off you or gets in the way. Been doing it for two years now. Got a free one at a coaches clinic and I used it for a season but it was a cheap freebie so it eventually wore a hole in it so I got my own. It's become the way I prefer to have everything I need with me out on the practice field.

Stopwatch on a lanyard. Fox 40 whistle on the lanyard as well. Hat - Trucker style, with the mesh back. I get the white front with the team color bill and wear it season after season. It's my 'work' hat and by the time I throw passes all summer, workouts, field lining, etc., it's pretty grungy. After a couple of seasons water drips brown when it rains. Very useful for grossing out the players who think they are tough. The salt lines are nice to display as well. Always wear school colors at least, may not have clean'ish school gear. Usually white polo shirt, hardly ever t-shirts. Sport shorts with pockets, in school colors. Logo gear if I can get it/afford it. I use these www.staples.com/bound+page+protector/directory_bound+page+protector for my practice packet. 10-pages of the plastic sheet protectors bound together. 10 insert pages means 20 pages of information. I have the game plan, roster/depth chart, daily practice plan, notes, etc. I can pretty much put the whole game plan in there and change the daily stuff as needed. Roll it it up and put it in a pocket when not needed. I also use these for the scout offense/defense. Draw up the plays, usually 1 per page to the left and right, which allows for 20 plays to both directions, insert them in the pockets, and they are there in a nice display format that is not in a binder. I carry a clickable sharpie in the pocket, clickable so there is no cap to lose. Use it to mark attendance, corrections, roster changes, etc. White socks turned down as low as possible to avoid the odd tan line. My feet are sooo white at the end of the summer that it looks like they are dipped in latex. Running shoes, usually bland grey or black or something. I've never worn cleats when coaching. Here is the SF Bay area we don't get the extreme heat that others do so the gear is lighter. I have my messenger bag at the end of the field. I never carry a phone on the field but may change that with the iThingies direct to Hudl and the benefit I saw for videoing practice last season. Did it just a couple of times and it was really valuable for correcting on the spot. The players never seem to believe you until they see it. The bag has my keys, notebook, full scouting report and game plan, papers, pens, water, PowerBars, and gum.

Smartphone in your hand and you are scribbling notes? Just do a quick voice recording or video your self talking. Much faster. Even type a quick note if you don't want to talk. Then you can read it.

Hat(school logo'd baseball style hat always, cant stand to not have a hat cold, rainy, sunny, always a hat) Whistle (front right pocket or in hand, cant stand to have anything around my neck however I generally just throw my fingers in my mouth to whistle) cargo shorts(I fold the practice plan down and put it in the side pocket) Keys(go in left side pocket) Tennis shoes(hard for me to coach without needing to demonstrating something) School Tee Shirt or college logo'd tee shirt Phone in front left pocket(don't answer it, but I set alarms on phone to go along with practice plan) phone goes off, look down ind O/break/ind D/etc...) Practice script back left pocket wallet back right pocket. My wedding ring(Wouldn't be where I am without her)
I don't wear a watch because I hate things around my wrist.
My post practice clothes I find just as important as what I am wearing in practice. extra tee shirt, mesh shorts, sandles to let my feet air out. May be TMI but I always wear boxer briefs as it seems to deter chaffing more than any other type of underwear. Butt paste(diaper rash ointment) and baby powder are also a must to be left in my desk.
