Hey guys I took the year off from coaching to go to grad school, so I got to travel around and watch a lot of games from the stands. And I'll tell you (as I'm sure you know) you get the exact same attitude from the HS crowd as you do on the message boards. Folks want to question every play call or personnel decision as if they've been at practice all week. It takes restraint not to turn around and say "what the hell do you know?" ("Why are we running the ball so much? Its not working!" - watching a Veer team in the 1st quarter) I couldn't agree more! As a high school option coach I loathe all the crap about how we run the "same" play all the time. That we don't have any imagination. The worst part is that these negative comments come on newspaper blogs, produced with anonymity. All seem to have the same basic advice, "spread it out and throw the ball!" In fact I have had on "supporter" that will bellow "throw the ball!" With a large megaphone (no doubt brought by him so that he may offer his insightful advice at critical times). All this and the offense averages more than 325 yards a game. Thank goodness for our "fans."

Funny you should mention announcers. I'm listening to the Pennsylvania Single A championship game between Clairton and Dunmore. Clairton drove 97yards but didn't score on 4th down and the radio announcers just ripped the play call. They've won 62 games in a row. I think the coaches have some idea what they're doing.

I generally ignore fans when they start talking scheme. Especially if they start talking defense.

But coach, as I mentioned earlier in the thread, that is their JOB. Their JOB is to be discussion/argumentative oriented. I mean, think about this board..some of the most POPULAR threads were threads that were shut down because they strayed away from x and o talk and became a little controversial or adversarial.

I generally ignore fans when they start talking scheme. Especially if they start talking defense. I've gotten to where I hate going to college games especially since if I'm there it's because we have ex-players in the game or because I'm friends with one or more of the coaches. I haven't had personal experience with fans getting derogatory but the dumb comments are just amazing.

I have come to the point where I tell people "I am a football snob" when they invite me to watch a game with a group of people (lots of Saints and LSU parties, particularly during their superbowl and championship runs.) I don't want to watch a game with joe public

I don't want to watch a game with joe public It's terrible listening to joe public during football games, it's worse in the stands during your schools game haha. I spent a season out of state for work and missed the entire regular season once. I returned home just in time for a playoff game and of coarse I made sure to attend. Deciding NOT to hit the field as I felt it wasn't right for me to plant myself back onto the team abruptly late in the year - I watched the game from the stands and nearly wanted to fight a few guys haha. The "You have to pass the ball there" and "I don't know what coach is doing" was getting old - especially when we were winning! haha Finally I had to turn and say "Are they not 11-1? Winning a playoff game right now? Do you coach this team or does Coach (Blank)? You don't, you don't know what they are doing so stop with the charades." haha

Is the irony lost here that so many people are complaining about the "announcers or pundits" not knowing what the coach's job truly are.... while not actually knowing what the announcers/pundits jobs are? I actually got to have a really great conversation with Otto Bolden (former Olympic sprinter, does the Olympics on NBC, GREAT guy) about his job. His big thing was that 90% of the viewers don't REALLY know about what's happening within the event, but they LOVE the narrative of the individual players/competitors. I think the problem is that a lot of announcers find it really easy to slip into the negative side of the narrative ("Oh my goodness, that was a terrible decision to go for it on 4th and goal with 30s left and down by six") instead of finding the positive side ("And the senior laden defense makes one final stand to win the bowl game!") because it's just EASIER and almost turns the announcers into a demagogue who is working against the coaches, rather than supporting the players.

Like has already been said, ESPN is entertainment, so they are there to be controversial. As far as fans, just remember fan is short for fanatic.

I generally ignore fans when they start talking scheme. Especially if they start talking defense. I hear you guys in reference to the ESPN guys, it is their jobs and perhaps we are just talking about the game at the collegiate level and above. However, my issue is with those that get the ear of a high school administration or better yet are allowed to voice opinion anonymously through blogs and print media, their negative opinion of a program and a coaching staff. Having experienced the meeting firsthand, "Coach, we have been hearing..." or "We understand that..." and then I ask, "Where are you hearing this from? Who is sharing this misinformation with you?" to be followed with, "We aren't at liberty to say, that person (or those people) want to keep their names out of it." So of course my feeling is that the complaint or issue is without validity. The problem with that, is that it is my boss asking the question and he or she wants a response. Pretty crappy stuff. Thank God I no longer work for those folks and my current management have never demonstrated this propensity in the past two years. It is however, still a problem that I see no real solution. We (coaches) are just at the mercy of these "educated" opinions.

I think one of the problems is the 24 hour news cycle in general. When you have 24 hours to cover, you have to grasp for straws and stir controversy. I guess gone are the days when sports reporters simply reported scores in the 5 minutes allotted to them in the evening news. The talking heads are here to stay. I just think it has negative repercussions for our profession, as most of this garbage is repeated by the fans, parents, etc.., who in some situations actually have influence over the hiring and firing of coaches, ability of kids to buy in, etc.. It is really bad here in Alabama, due in large part to the continuous media coverage Alabama and Auburn receive. People who follow that garbage believe that they somehow have insight into the way that top-tier coaches operate.
