Heading into the second year of our football program and we have a very good Freshman (sophomores to be) class. But, the to be junior/senior class is down and part of the old tradition losing football program. Are we better off keeping the better sophomore players all together for next year? or taking some of the better sophomore individual players and moving them up to help the varsity team?
IMO, I feel you always want to do whats best for the team to win now, and not worry too much about the future...
Looking forward to your feedback!!

Play the best players. If the sophomore is better, play him.

I agree, we had that situation this year and we struggled at times, sophomores are sophomores but they were the best we had and it wasn't close, but if we can keep their heads straight I believe they got invaluable experience and is best for us in the long term.

We are facing the same situation this coming year. The best player will play. It is possible we will be starting 6 or more sophomores on both sides of the football. It will make for a difficult season but we feel as though long term it will be beneficial to those kids to get the experience and it should pay off in the long run.

Agree that the best players should play, BUT, if you want to build a program, kids have to see that their hard work and dedication will pay off and that there is some amount of loyalty. So for those Juniors and Seniors that are being displaced, there ought to be a clear difference in the Sophs abilities... Otherwise, go with the older kids.

Some may argue that if those Jr. and Sr. players were dedicated and working hard they wouldn't be beat out by Sophomores.

I'd be weary of how the program got to that position, I was hired 2 years ago to join a team that went 0-10. The bright spot was how many sophmores they were starting. I never stopped to think on why the older kids hadn't developed into decent players and why there was so much attrition. Not going to go into our situation too specifically, but it is worth considering before you move the youngsters up. Can you reverse the trend with the older kids or are they too far gone?

Coachpsl, unfortunately, next season's varsity is too far gone to kick the trend but we are definitely creating new leadership and success with the sophomores and incoming freshman. Lots to look forward too!!
