I am a 5th year Youth football coach and have taken over a 11-12 yr old team due to the previous head coaches removal because of severe bashing of the players. I've been with many of these boys for 5 seasons of my coaching career and never in my life have i seen so many broken spirited players(amoung many other issues). I was the asst. head of this team with my hands tied until now. I am looking for some perspective on ways to lift the spirits of my players and show them the game of football is fun and can be enjoyable.

Might i add i also have my hands full regrouping an offense of an 0-4 team that is much more capable. I feel i need insight on lifting my players up emotionally and the rest will follow.

If you just go in with a positive attitude the first day of practice and try to teach instead of yell that will probably get the job done.

Tough situation, coach. Just tell the kids how you intend to things - positive and focus on fundamentals, etc. Don't criticize the guy that's gone - just focus on what you want to do going forward, then do what you say. Like coachsmyly said, be positive and focus on teaching and you should do okay.

maybe having the drill sergeant gone will raise their spirits enough.

I hope so, thanks for your insight. Today is my first practice with staff changes. Going run things more organized and focus on getting all the negativity. I feel players will react to some sort of routine being we have yet to even put a practice plan in place under the ex-head coach. I have an easy game this weekend so hopefully a win will help as well.

"I have an easy game this weekend" -- First mistake!!
Never take another program lightly. It will trickle down to your kids.
If winning and losing is not your focus, my thoughts as to how you should enter your situation, just go out there and have some fun with the kids. Teach the kids fair play, fundamentals and be simple on offense and defense.
just my thoughts!!

I agree to a point, but i scouted this team last week and they could not even snap the football. I don't let my players know records of opponents or quality of the team. I see a confidence builder. The opponent performed so poorly i had to ask if the age group was 9-10 or 11-12. I will puke if we do not destroy this team. Haha

Update: All went well yesterday as we took our first win in a 4 touchdown shutout! 4 different players reached the end zone and all of my players received extra play time and worked as a team. Confidence was very high and we expect to continue our momentum next week.
