I am thinking about taking a head coaching job at a school that is just starting football next year. What do you coaches believe is the best offense to start with. I have been a assistant coach at a school that runs the I most of the time, but wanted some opinions on other offenses that I might need to look into

Depends on the type of kids you have. I am starting to become a believer in the Wing-T. You might not have great athletes, and this offense can be more of an equalizer.

Coach,
Particularly when you are going to a new school and a new program...COACH WHAT YOU KNOW BEST!!
The last thing you want to do as a new coach with a new program is try to implement something you don't know inside and out.
Maybe take what you know best and whittle it down to basics for the first year to really establish the system, then build from there.

id pick an offense you know very well. Once you pick an offense stick with it, let the kids have an identity with tha toffense. give them pride in running that offense. ive seen coaches try and switch the offens eevry year depending on the players, pick a system and let the kids grow into the system.

what can you live with running when it "gets bad" and when it "gets good"? How much can you live with?
You must be a defensive guy, huh?
A lot of times guys will SAY they want to run XYZ scheme, then when the heat comes, they lose all belief in the 'system' and abandon it altogether seeking their 'comfort blanket' of PDQ scheme.
Whatever you can stick to your guns with (usually what you know best) is what you should commit your program to. No scheme is bullet-proof and no scheme is horrible (except the one you can't commit to)
So, if you don't have an offense....WHO is going to be calling it?

How are they in the fundamentals department? Start here. What is your philosophy offensively? I'd work the hardest on defense and special teams......those will set the foundation Finally, whatever system you decide on, rep the crap out of it------over and over again

I agree with the statement run what you know best. BUT, if this is a small school you are going to be very limited on offense. I tend to favor the idea "run what your talent allows you to run." I took over an 0-9 team and went from a maining run attack to a spread attack (STILL mostly run attack, just a completely different style). We will finish 6-3. I think my college roommate put it best when he describe my system. "You have those kids in the best possible positions." We will finish third in the league. We scored more points by the second game of the season then the team scored all of last year total! And we did it with quite possibly only 2 all-league players. If I would have taken over a team with huge kids up front and hard running backs, you can bet your butt we wouldn't have done the system that I know best. I CAN LEARN A NEW SYSTEM EASIER THAN A KID CAN MASTER A SKILL THAT HE IS AT A PHYSICAL DISADVANTAGE IN. I initally wrote quicker. It takes a lot of time, but I am willing to put that time in. I will work hard in the offseason, I will prepare for all those tough situations, I will ask other successful coaches who have run the XYZ system even if I know ABC best. Now there are some VERY good coaches (I may be the worst coach on this board) that disagree, but I have had a lot of success with this in my situation. Just my two cents.

Another school thats just starting football We did this back 5 years ago, honestly, it makes no difference what you run offensively or defensively, as long as its pretty simple, cause you'll need to spend most of your time teaching the very basic fundamentals, rules, basic drills, etc., at least for the first couple seasons, our guys didn't know how to do anything. So yeah, whatever you can teach the easiest
