Looking for ideas on having coaches coach only one side of the ball but players working both ways. Split to varsity and JV, set schedule to have both working at the same time, then switch to the other side of the ball. Any feedback or ideas would be appreciated. We are looking at going to this for our spring in May. Does anyone work both side the same day? Thanks, Mike

We did this at our school for the first time this past year and it worked out great.
We break it down as varsity (Sr/Jr.) and young guys (fr/Soph). We ran it the way you described with 150 kids in the program.

Your approach is what we are going to implement this year. It seems to be a really big trend here in Minnesota.

toprowguy - do you have a sophomore and j.v. team? If not - did your frosh and j.v. seperate for team sessions? Could you post a quick run through of a typical day? Also - what days do your frosh and j.v. (and maybe sophomore) teams play, and how does that effect your practice schedule?

We do that at our school we break it up this way.
Monday 30 min - the offensive staff and Fresh. staff go out with the Fresh - the Def. lifts the Var/JV
30 min - The def. comes out and works the Fresh and the Off takes the JV for special teams and the DC watches film with the Var.
When the Var comes out the fresh go to the other fields and work team. The offense takes the var. for 12 periods and the def takes the 2 JV teams. For the first 6 periods the Soph team runs scout and the JV gets their Def work then the last six periods the JV runs scout and the Soph team gets their Def work. after 12 periods we switch and the Defense takes the Varsity.
Tuesday it's the same premise just flip everything. Also we go 15 period each that day. The first 8 the Soph run scout the last 7 the JV run scout
Wednesday The varsity goes straight out and we go 14 periods offense then 14 periods defense. We have the same split scout team schedule. The Freshman go straight to their field.
Thursday walk through
Friday Game
I don't pretend to be a football expert, that was just a quick rundown of what we do I hope it was not too confusing. I also hope that will help in your planning if there are any questions I can help with just let me know.

We have a Frosh, Soph, JV and Varsity schedule.
Soph plays Thursday afterschool
Frosh plays Friday afterschool
Varsity plays Friday or Saturday night
JV plays Monday afterschool
Our Frosh practice withh our Soph team during team practice. We will run two frosh team O's and one Soph team O. They will alternate reps, running the same play to a different side.
Our JV is usually made up of our second varsity offense and maybe a few soph's.
Hope this helps. Anything else I can help you with please ask.
