Started season with the following OL:
LT: 6-3 290, Jr. Legit D1 prospect in every regard, but probably as a Guard.
LG: 5-8 200, Sr, very scrappy when on the field, smart, good puller. If he's healthy and dressed out, he gives 100%, but looks for reasons to be hurt and not practice.
C: 5-8 220, Soph, solid player, knows the playbook, but thinks any pain means he need to visit the ER.
RG: 5-6 220, Fr. not good practice player, but a gamer. Has progressed at a fine rate, and does well. Good athlete. Dependable.
RT: 6-0 260, Fr. Not the greatest athlete, but has potential, progressing well, needs time in weight room. Dependable.
At our level of competition (Smallest private school division) this is as good an OL as you'll find.
RG and RT played park ball together all their lives, and make a good team on that side.
1st injury came in game 2. LG with high ankle sprain. Forced to move C to LG, put in 5-6 165lb Jr in at C. This doesn't work so well, so we move LT down to LG, and put in 6-5 250 Fr. at LT, and tell LG he has to tell him what to do on each play until he learns. Fr. learns pretty quick, and is a solid blocker. Move my starting C back.
LT turned LG breaks hand. Cast on it, and doc clears him to play with cast. Doc or someone messed up, and didn't cast it correctly, and after one week, he has to have surgery to fix the extra damage done. Meanwhile starting C has pain from nagging partial separation in his shoulder that occurred at a camp in August, and holds himself out all last week pending MRI. He winds up playing Fri. night at LG because starter there out, but doesn't know the game plan, and tells LT wrong things to do. LT knew what to do actually, but followed LGs orders instead. 5-6 165 C got his rear end abused, and really hurt our run game, not to mention a multitude of bad shotgun snaps once he got his mind messed up.
Biggest kicker of all. My big legit D1 prospect's mother is telling him he has to quit football, and even wants to pull him from the school because we made him play injured, though the doc cleared him. She doesn't want her baby hurt anymore. He broke his leg badly in 8th grade playing football, and she wants him to quit.
I had one potential Jr. G quit in spring, and another in August. Both had potential to play, though maybe not excel. I have to worthless kids with the bodies to contribute but absolutely no want to. One was sick and out of practice for 2 solid weeks, yet, miraculously was able to travel and dress Friday.
My remaining bodies are a 6-0 150 Soph, that just isn't real strong, smart, or quick, and though I've harped on it all year, still takes 2 steps back to take one forward when coming out of his stance. Now, this week, because our back up C is so bad with snaps, we moved the starter back from LG, I have to start a 5-11 140 WR at LG (because he plays that on JV and knows the plays). Got to say this about the kid, he works hard, and has a lot of want to.
My original starting LG played one game, and reinjured his ankle and to be hones, I think he simply doesn't want to play.
We are 6-1, 3-0 in our Region, and it's about to all come to an end. I get injuries happen, but what I don't get is these kids inability to endure a little pain when hurt (not injured), and all the quit that seems to be in our team as a whole.
Im getting VERY frustrated. I'm especially frustrated with the mother of my big kid making him quit football so he won't ever get hurt again. Ludicrous!
Starting OL this week.
LT: 6-5 250 Fr. that doesn't know the whole playbook.
LG: 5-11 140 Fr. that's not played a down of OL at this level
C: Same Soph Starter
RG Same Fr. Starter
RT: Same Fr. Starter.
