Grades come out today. I wonder how many of my knuckleheads will not make the all world 2.0 team. Here in California you can get a waiver if you dont get a 2.0. Ive told my kids, no waiver on this team. No grades equals, you need to be at the library, not the football field. What are your positions on this type of subject? It may be a little different for varsity staff, Im freshman.

I think it depends on the area you coach at. In an urban setting, the kids may need to be around the coaches as much as possible. Not sent to "maybe" go to the library. We will do a manditory study hall before practice for all those who don't have a 2.0. Everyone else does pre-practice or special teams.
We make kids come to practice with their books. They cannot practice until they get grades.
Of course we also make them get weekly progress reports signed from every teacher....so there is not a suprise come grade time.

Kids can get diplomas certifying a HS education with an 0.8 GPA.
Too many "educators" use eligibility requirements in a punitive way, to try to prove to "stake holders" that they "put academics first."
If I believe in the educational value of HS Football (and if I don't, why would I coach it?), I'm not going to do anything exclusionary or punitive.
There have been studies that show kids do better in the classroom when involved in Extracurricular activities, and none that show elevated eligibility requirements improve performance of either athletes or the school in general.

They are "Student-Athletes" and the one thing I stress to the players and the parents, is that the "Student" comes first.
Three days a week I have a 45 minute study hall before practice. This is mandatory for the entire team. Not only does this give the players time to get their work finished, but it gives my non-teaching coaches time to get to practice from their jobs.
The school district provides weekly "Eligibility Reports". Upon the first week of failure, players are declared on probation. The next time they are declared ineligible. My team policy is three strikes, and you are removed from the team. Probation does count as a strike. For the students that failed classes at the end of the previous school year, according to school policy they are required to miss the first two contests the following year.

This is going to sound dumb. Im not a teacher. I never realized you could graduate with a .08 gpa. I always thought you had to average a 2.0. Learn something new everyday. I can see the point of not punishing the student athlete but I think as freshman if you cannot maintain a 2.0 this is a good time to learn the consequences. Maybe a little reality check.

You can graduate now and never step in the school doors. Credit recovery and VLA (virtual learning academy) mean, stay home, do drugs and still graduate. I have seen it happen many times. At least sports gets them to school.

At the schools I have worked most Freshmen (not just athletes) struggle academically because of higher expectations, increased difficulty of curriculum, and they are used to being passed on without actually having to accomplish or learn anything ("Social Promotion"). The rate of 9th Graders who fail at least one class is high.

We don't get the "probation" here like we did when I was in CA, but school gets out at 2:25 PM each day, and we start MANDATORY STUDY HALL at 2:35 each Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday. We go from 2:35 until 3:20 (45 minutes) where they have to be reading an academic book, doing homework out of an academic book, and can't have phones, ipods, etc...
Meetings for O/D/ST go from 3:30 until 4:00 and then practice from 4:15 until 6:25.
When I got here in the spring of 2011, team GPA was 2.5 with 11 ineligible kids on a roster of 47... At the end of fall 2011 our GPA was 3.1 with 0 ineligible kids on a roster of 80... Spring semester I am not allowed to do anything "mandatory" or interfere with other sports, so I ended up with 1 kid ineligible from my 60 coming back. Too bad it was my only true RB in the whole program. Killing us not being able to run the ball this year.
The first thing I told parents/admin/community when I got here was that grades are more important than football, so we spend 45 minutes after school making the kids do their homework before we ever set foot on the practice field.

I'm coaching baseball now, but the grade sheet that is signed by the teachers is the "ticket" for the kids to play fall ball. What is on the grade sheet is important...but getting them to go around to their teachers is important as well. This weekend we have a game. Any students with a D or F cannot play unless they have a note from their teacher showing "marked" improvement.
I want responsible people playing the team. People I can count on. I take into account if they have a learning disability or something...but I need these guys to perform in pressure situations. If they can't "perform" homework??? We have an issue.

Well got the dreaded sheet today. My qb, rb, LG, CB all out didnt make grades. Going to make it super tough. We are a team that has very little talent. We also have four starter out due to injury. In all the years of coaching I have never had a less talented team than this and after this, wow. Going to keep working hard. We have four games left. I dont see us winning any of them. Never had a season like this. Very tough, but after reading what some are going through on this site, it puts it into perspective. Ill keep coaching my goofy freshman up.

Well there is some good news. My son is on varsity. I had the same policy when he was a freshman. I wasnt an HC then but still we did the same thing. Today my son came home and said "dad everyone on varsity made grades" I'd like to think I was a part of the reason. Little victories, I guess.

we just got waivers... legal in NCS and CA but our district didnt allow them until last season and even then, you have to get a 1.66
I know that should be easy to get, but it isnt a level playing field.
Everyone has different rules, most schools have an anything goes waiver policy, meaning if the principal signs it, you can play... no minimum GPA required
Also some schools use a waiver once for all 4 years of HS, other schools have a waiver per school year
Our Biggest rival for example, has a waiver per year, and no minimum... a kid can get a 0.0 gpa in the spring, and play the first 8-9 football games for their school
Again not saying my kids shouldnt get their grades up, just saying it isnt a level playing field
I would love to say no grades they cant play blah blah blah, but for some of our kids , football is the only thing that keeps them out of SERIOUS trouble (gangs, crime, jail, death)

We have study hall at our school + a study hall on Wednesdays (early release), no reason our kids can't carry a 2.0. I have computers in my room for online work, and let teachers come in to tutor guys in certain subjects. They study hall from 130-230. That's 3-4 study hall sessions per week all over 1 hour. Not to mention, we don't practice after 530 M-W and 430 on Thur. No Sat or Sun practices for players. Work/life balance is set up perfectly for these guys.

I'm coaching wrestling now, but our district has a 2.0 gpa to play policy. Last year, I had my best wrestler failing 2 classes after football season ended, so I told him not to come back until his grades were fixed. He missed about 5 weeks of the season, came back with a report saying he had over a 2.0 and had a C in both classes. Ended up making the state individual finals at 220 lbs.
