This is kind of a digression... we haven't been to any tournaments in years, but we do have a 7 on 7 mini-camp / league (have to make it a camp to be legal here). We wear helmets. Several years ago, before we wore helmets, we had a collision in one of our games and a player (opposing team) had to be taken by ambulance to the emergency room. I guess I am the reason we went to helmets (we started this 7 on 7 camp)... I just feel a bit better about having them since we had an incident already- though minor injuries (helmet to any non-protected part of the body) have probably slightly increased.
For the record, the last tournament we were in (2001 or 2002), was played out without helmets (which I think is the norm).

I know that they don't in Utah or California, but I wish they would...
2 years ago, when my brother was a Junior in high school, he went up for an INT playing FS, at a 7-on-7, and the WR bumped his legs and landed on his head. Gave him a grade 3 concussion, and even though they held him out for almost 3 months (until season started) he got another serious concussion in the 3rd game from just getting tackled from behind... Had to sit out the last 8 games of his junior year, and couldn't play his senior year... Not just the fact that he was getting looked at by a couple of smaller D1 schools, but now that he is a freshman in college, he has headaches, and lingering problems from the concussions.
Basically the Doctors are 99.9999% sure that if he would have had at least a helmet on to cushion the fall a little bit, he would have been perfectly fine... One of the reasons I lobby for tournaments to require helmets when we go to them... Don't want that happening to another kid...

are you guys using football helmets or a modified head gear like that i've seen in soccer?
do any injuries (contussions, broken bones, etc.) occur due to helmet to "body" contact?

For us: are you guys using football helmets or a modified head gear like that i've seen in soccer?
Regular football helmets
do any injuries (contussions, broken bones, etc.) occur due to helmet to "body" contact?
To this point, nothing major (need to find some wood to knock on though). We probably have had a few more bruises, but nothing serious as a result of helmet contact.
We (coaches) officiate our own (pretty quick whistles... if he looks like he was touched, he's down), we don't keep score (we do have down & distance, etc. and keep track of drives).
It is pretty low key here.
Ours is basically a 7 on 7 practice segment with another team.
A tournament is a different animal. I could see more injuries coming from a situation where a score is kept, winning/losing, advancement to another round, etc.

In WA we wear helmets. In local 7-7 passing leagues and at all the university Team Camps the evening passing leagues require helmets.
I thinks its good for safety and gets players used to the vision of playing with your helmet on. There is enough about passing league that doesn't simulate true game situations, don't need another.
All the rules I have seen warn players against using their helmet to initiate contact. It's a big no no!

We're in WA too, have been to dozens of 7on situations over the past dozen years and outside of group skelly time at team camp, never saw helmets.
Are you on the East or West side of the Mtns?
Competed at the Big Kahuna 7 on 7 in Burnaby Canada and saw a kid hit his nose on another kid's knee - broken nose, concussion and probably the best argument for putting on the hats.

TD - The rainy side.
Our team normally only does a short 7-7 season with a couple other local teams. We go to a Westside Team Camp every year and they require helmets. I know some of the Eastside College Camps don't require helmets.
I also know of a couple nearby passing leagues don't go with Helmets. I prefer hats on.
Heck, further up toward the mountain, they probably prefer not to wear helmets on Friday Nights!
