Guys, last weekend, we played in a jamboree (5 games, each with a 20-minute running clock). While we played pretty well in the first 4 games, we got absolutely detstroyed in our last game 32-6. We are playing that same team again in 2 weeks and it is our last game of the season. Obviously, I want for us to play better and end the season with a respectable performance. But, this team is very good...as you can see, they pretty much can score at will and are quite formidable defensively.
Here's video of the game:
These are my thoughts:
1) We played a 6-2 exclusively. The problem we had is that once their backs got outside of our DEs, there was no one left to make the tackle. What I want to do is play a 4-3 against these guys in two weeks. That would allow us to move our DEs back off the LOS to an OLB position and give them a little more outside leverage to stop that jet sweep. The other thing I am thinking is that it will allow our corners to provide secondary run force if our OLBs do get beat to the outside.
2) We are going to play 2 safeties about 8 yards off the ball and basically blitz them into the D gap every play if action comes to their side. The backside safety will stay home in case a reverse, boot, or counter is coming back at them. That will give use 3 players backside (OLB, CB, and Safety) for BCR. Basic idea is for the OLBs to build a wall and force the jet sweep and other perimeter plays back inside to the safeties.
3) Corners will be pass-first players. They will check the TE before they do anything else. Their only role in run defense will be as secondary force players if the OLBs lose contain.
4) MLB will key fullback and go wherever he goes
That is the plan on defense. On offense, I'm really not sure what to do. Here's my thoughts:
1) Because we were rotatiing players between offense and defense and even between positions on offense and defense, our usual starting QB was playing on defense and our best running back was playing quarterback. When we play these guys in two weeks, we will make sure to have our starting QB and best running back in their positions.
2) Counter and criss cross should be a huge play against these guys because they are so aggressive. The problem is that we just weren't holding our blocks long enough to spring our backs.
3) Spread formations - I think we need to get out of double tights and use two split receivers. That would at least get their cornerbacks out of the box. We have a kid...big kid who can run and jump. Maybe we put him out at receiver and throw a few times to him, that will force the defense to pull a safety out of the box.
4) More boots. Problem, as I see it, is that they are getting upfield so quickly and aggressively, I just don't know if we will have enough time to let the plays develop.
Any thoughts? Feel free to be as critical as you think you need to be.
